It has been a long time since so much syrupy nostalgia has been in evidence at the White House. But Tuesday night, when President Bush announced his choice for the next associate justice of the Supreme Court, it was hard not to marvel at the 1950s-style tableau vivant that was John Roberts and his family.
There they were -- John, Jane, Josie and Jack -- standing with the president and before the entire country. The nominee was in a sober suit with the expected white shirt and red tie. His wife and children stood before the cameras, groomed and glossy in pastel hues -- like a trio of Easter eggs, a handful of Jelly Bellies, three little Necco wafers. There was tow-headed Jack -- having freed himself from the controlling grip of his mother -- enjoying a moment in the spotlight dressed in a seersucker suit with short pants and saddle shoes. His sister, Josie, was half-hidden behind her mother's skirt. Her blond pageboy glistened. And she was wearing a yellow dress with a crisp white collar, lace-trimmed anklets and black patent-leather Mary Janes.

If pictures are worth a thousand words, this one's worth a thousand expletives.
We'll never know for sure, but I'd be willing ot bet that there are fashion consultants/marketing consultants whatever you want to call them that plan these photos like a wedding photographer plans the wedding photographs.
Great post-and it's really no different than how they've hounded the lovely Laura Bush about her wardrobe. What's nice is that these women seem to be secure in their identities, and not constantly seeking some "look"(a la Hillary Clinton). They dress in an uneventful but tasteful and appropriate way,and go about their business. Some people are just that secure, that they don't need plaudits for their "fashion savvy". They're perfectly fine with dressing like ladies.
Is the Post still taking multi page advirtisments from Saudi Arabia extoling the wonderfulness of this corrupt
piece of garbbage third world crap hole?
This once proud source for information has become little more then a propaganda rag.
Normal scares the shit out of the moronic left.
How about bemoaning the '50's nostalgia with Senator Dick "Eddie Haskell" Durbin, and Senator Barak "Lumpy" Obama? These monikers really fit this crew, and many of us are ashamed to be from Illinois because of it.
OMG. What a snotty article that was just LOOKING for something to complain about. To complain how the Roberts family was dressed is just someone who HAD to write something negative about the other night and this was the best they could do.
This was no doubt written by one of the many bitter lesbians of the WashCompost Style section who will never have a family of their own, so they attack other people's children.
You guys are hopeless.
Taupe is a good summer color in lieu of white or black. A pump is a plain close toed shoe sort of the equivalent of a man's wing tip. Taupe pumps are the everready shoe, matches most everything, is always in the closet of the well dressed lady who never knows when and what she will be wearing.
Thank you, you are right on. I in my younger years, often wore beige or taupe shoes with some outfits. I had a beautiful cobalt blue silk dress, and I wore beige heels. It was a smashing combination, and also added length to my legs. I had many a man take a pleasant look my way.
This family was absolutely beautiful, what a crock to attack them in this way. She is also a lawyer, if I remember correctly, and very smart. They are jealous.
They have nothing, stand for nothing and are nothing.
Your post 99 nails it.
Now I hate those sherbet colors and all that pink but that is the uniform. I myself would have worn something black or ivory but that is just me.
The kids were perfect. And did look like old money but I sort of like old money on the supreme court. At least old money implies a sense of tradition and the futility of bribing.
Mrs. Robeerts jacket bothered me, it seemed to big but that is just me. Nothing to get all het up about. And I like shorter hair.
What a nice looking family.
We could use some more of this "outdated 50's" approach to the family nowdays.
Of course, the WP and NYT will freak out if more than 2 families in the entire country actually manage to look and behave like a "traditional" family.
This hit piece by the WP would be comical if it weren't so tragic. Where do they find these idiot writers? Their only issue with Roberts was that his family looked too.."traditional family"?!!
Man, if all they can do is attack Roberts on how "traditional" his family is..
What the left has sunk to. Sad.
I liked the little boy. I still enjoy the film of his antics. Typical 4 year old.
The author of this trash has no style.
Rush predicted this yesterday. He said that since they wouldn't be able to complain about the wierd beard (bork) or mustache (Bolton), they'd go after the wholesomeness of the well-groomed family.
Not having ever been on TV myself, I'd be wearing Depends, because I'd probably be peeing in my pants.
Very true. Old money people are generally the ones who treat the "help" the most respectfully and actually respect hard work and decency. Trust me, I saw it from both sides.
Sorry, I notice now you plow right through my replies, but you are so correct.

Btw, young John was only doing his calisthenics at the presentation the other night.
