It was instead the political genius who always does them in at key moments, our fox of a president, George W. Bush. All day Tuesday he had them sent on wild goose chases. Then come 9:00 p.m. primetime, he trotted out his golden swan. Soon they were kicking themselves, as nonviolently as possible, for permitting Bush free rein, coast to coast, on every major channel and network out there. But given that they'd turned the O'Connor retirement into the biggest event since the deaths of John Lennon, Ronald Reagan, and John Paul II combined, it was only fitting that Bush rose to the occasion in naming her successor.

Sometimes *retreat* can be a good thing. It gives you the chance to tend to the wounded, revise plans, and count the remaining ammunition. They don't understand that concept. *Charge* is the only word they know in this war against this President.
