Scientists: Humans cause global warming
CNN ^ | 7/21/05

Global warming is caused primarily by humans and "nearly all climate scientists today" agree with that viewpoint, the new head of the National Academy of Sciences -- a climate scientist himself -- said Wednesday.

Ralph Cicerone's views contrasted with Bush administration officials' emphasis on uncertainty about how much carbon dioxide and other industrial gases warm the atmosphere like a greenhouse.

"Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is now at its highest level in 400,000 years and it continues to rise," said Cicerone, an atmospheric scientist who left as chancellor of University of California-Irvine to become academy president this month. "Nearly all climate scientists today believe that much of Earth's current warming has been caused by increases in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, mostly from the burning of fuels."

Cicerone, testifying before a Senate Commerce subcommittee on global climate change, cited data from weather stations and ships indicating the surface of the Earth is generally hotter by about seven-tenths of 1 degree Fahrenheit just since the early 1970s.

The administration officials stressed the $5 billion spent yearly on U.S. climate programs, mostly research. David Conover, a principal deputy assistant energy secretary, said President Bush would lead on the issue though "the scientific and technology challenges are considerable."

James Mahoney, assistant commerce secretary for oceans and atmosphere, said, "We know that the surface of the Earth is warmer, and that an increase in greenhouse gases caused by humans is contributing to the problem." But he did not go further than that.

"We see economic growth, addressing the climate change problem and energy security as integrally related," said Daniel Reifsnyder, director of the State Department's Office of Global Change.

"Nearly all climate scientists today believe that much of Earth's current warming has been caused by increases in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, mostly from the burning of fuels."

OK. But, please support this contention with full reference to the climate changes beginning at the end of the last glacial period, some 12,000 years ago. Include sea level changes, glacial retreat, temperature fluctuations, and other similar factors, with special emphasis on the time period during which these changes occurred.

Hint: perhaps 90% of these changes occurred between 12,000 and 6,000 years ago.

For extra credit: please explain how Clovis, Folsom, etc. and early agricultural peoples did all of this ?!?!?

I'm sure it is -- the state of education today is that there are plenty of campus commies spreading this tripe as received wisdom.

Silly, facts don't matter. That's not a pattern, that has to be a statistical anomaly.

I read something interesting sometime back. The postulation was that 10 billion dollars a year in tree planting would eliminate all of the [supposed) excess CO2 the US is putting out.

Now, I have no hard numbers to verify the accuracy of that claim. Nor do I have a clue as to where I read it.

What it does do is bring up an interesting aspect of the enviro wacko's thought processes. Has anyone ever heard the Kyoto crowd suggest that we figure out how to lower CO2 after it is produced, rather than not producing it?

No. And the reason that would never enter their minds, is that it would not require what their goals really are about. Which, as we all know, is not CO2, it's anti capitalism and anti western.

Call me crazy but have any of these so called scientists considered the sun as the cause of global warming? By their thinking earth would still experience global warming even if the sun was suddenly destroyed because humans are the cause.

Global warming is caused primarily by humans

Yes, that's true. I agree 100%.
Huge environmentalist forest fires rage around the world every year giving off a tremendous amount of heat. Where does that heat go?
The more the worlds forest are left unattended because of environmental regulations, the greater the fire hazard and resulting fire.
Save the planet. Eliminate environmentalists.
