The sex, bribes and corruption scandal at Volkswagen is shaking the company to its core. But in a company whose largest shareholder is the German state of Lower Saxony, a number of politicians also have their fingers in this mess. Now, the affair is casting a shadow over federal elections.

Actually, Ferdinand Porsche's car company, where he got to realize his dream of cheap transportation for the masses through Hitler's support of the idea. Although it was the post-war Brits who made it a large, successful company.

Here's an excellent book on the subject. In addition to talking about the Beetle, it surveys other developments going on about the same time. My only complaint was that it referred to, but did not discuss, developments going on Italy; it does, however, talk about French, American, and eastern European developments. I would love to see a book about the Fiat 500 some day (I lived in Italy for a year in the 70s; 500s, 600s, and 650s were all over the place).
And it has some interesting pictures. Like one of Porsche serving as Archduke Ferdinand's chauffeur!
