Advice needed: Being harassed by census worker
07/21/2005 | Me

Posted on 07/21/2005 10:59:16 AM PDT by redbaiter

Two months ago a field agent from the US Census Bureau left a business card under my door, with a note requesting an interview for a survey the Bureau does on unemployment and income. The note explained the purpose of the survey and outlined the sorts of questions that would be asked (mostly income and work-related stuff). I called him back at the number provided, told him that my income was none of his business and requested that he not contact me any more.

This was not effective, and he continued to try to contact me. So I called him back again and ordered him to cease and desist. This too was ineffective, and he continues to try and contact me even now, two months later. (In the summer I am rarely home before 9PM so he has never succeeded.)

I asked around, and it turns out he has a pattern of similar behavior.

What can I do to make this guy cease and desist?

I won't even give them my name, just the number of people living in my home.

Nice find, I'll look into this tonight when I have some free time. Thanks.
This still will not deter me from refusing to answer their questions. I actually want to go into court and fight them on this. It's just a $100 and my time.

We are never going back to pre-war (I mean pre-Civil War) government so get used to the real world. Or at least dont embarrass yourself.

What you really mean is get used to bigger and bigger government, as that is what is clearly occurring. Me? I refuse to bend, and I get very creative in combating it. I just refuse to cooperate with those that make bad policies, and take my money for those policies.

Too bad you give real conservatism a bad name. Get it through your head there probably never was this grand period you think of when government only did was was enumerated. In fact there is a good chance that you live in a part of the US purchased unconstitutionally by Jefferson. We are never going back to pre-war (I mean pre-Civil War) government so get used to the real world. Or at least dont embarrass yourself.

I'm not sure what your point is. Is your point that because the government is now big, and involved with over 20% of hte GDP that we should never argue that is should be smaller? Is your point that because some things that have been done are unconstitutional that we should accept anything and everything going forward as constitutional whether it is or not?

I don't feel the slightest bit embarrassed by beleiving in smaller government. I would think that in a room of mainstream conservatives that you would be the one to feel out of place.

"What legitimate use is that? "

Ever take an economics course? If you have you will know that predicting future econmic trends is best served by reviewing past data. Unless you think the government plays no role in the US economy you can probably figure out why the government has a legitimate need for data.

Just meet him, and answer his questions.

But don't answer his questions.

"I duuno" is an answer.

When I am confronted by someone I would rather avoid, I make THEM leave ME alone.

1. Fart loudly - blame them - repeat as needed
2. Get down on your hands and knees in the front yard and busy yourself looking for something "lost" - assure the guy that you can answer his questions and look at the same time - only never answer just keep looking and after a few minutes ask him "what did you say?
3. Make phone calls during the "interview" when ever the guy starts to interrupt just hold up one finger and whisper "just a minute"
4. Just make up stupid answers - Q- "Are you employed full time?" your answer - "Watermelons!"
5. Pee your pants - I'm serious, this works! they guy will leave immediately.
6. "Assume the position" in front of your house while responding
7. Start and end every answer with a profanity - It's fun.
8. Answer One question, tell him that's all the time you have for now and ask him to come back in a week.

That should get you started! Have fun!

No, that would be a mistake. If you don't answer, the worst that can happen is a $150 fine, IIRC.

If you answer, but give false information, you can face incarceration and much larger fines.

So, either answer truthfully, or don't answer at all.

Nice try. The government should conduct the Constitutional census (the head count) and get out of the rest of the business.

Yes, in fact I would be willing to wager that my economics credentials far surpass 99.9% of the population. However, as far as I know, the Fed doesn't plan monetary policy around how many toilets are in your house. Most of the census data is used for things such as determining how much of various handout programs need to be allocated to states and localites. As I am against those programs, I see no need to provide the data that they require.

You make a good point. But if you refuse to give info and the folks eligable for government handouts do, then you are skewing the numbers in favor of more hand-outs.

I'm not sure what the ideal response it: If you were to lie and say that you were poor, would that then help them claim that there are more people who need help? Conversely, if you were to lie and say you are rich, would that then be used to claim that white males are doing so well that of course we should provide more to those "left behind"? I'm not sure of the right answer, which is why I assume that if ever asked I will just try to ignore them.

That one is posted in several places up here in the mountains of NorCal. This is a very rural place, and guess what? People here MEAN IT. From My first day up here it was explained straight off: "You can travel along any road, paved or unpaved, that is not blocked off in some manner. The highway is of course open to all, and the other roads leading off it on either side are generally Forest Service roads. Some are Logging roads, but they will have a crude No Trespassing sign of some sort posted right at the entrance. They do not lead to any areas of interest -assuming you are not part of the logging crew- and the logging truckers will be mightily upset with you if they are bringing a load out and you are in the way. If you decide to go exploring along the roads out there (outside of town) let someone know before you go so if you do not reappear after a couple of days we will know that you probably went down one of the roads with the "NO TRESSPASSING. VIOLATERS WILL BE SHOT" sign on a tree and a smaller "SURVIVERS WILL BE SHOT AGAIN" sign below it. People MEAN it. We will probably find your truck eventually, but probably not your body. There are just too many places out there to get rid of one." (This area is in the middle of some huge National Forest lands).

In order to have a Consumer Price Index, we need to sample the population and figure out what they purchase so that we can apply appropriate weights to that index. Guess who does that sampling? The Census Bureau.

The CPI is managed by the Labor Department. The Census Bureau / Commerce Department puts out some of the second-tier economic statistics like housing starts and retail sales, but as far as I know they only survey businesses for those.
