A clinic that specializes in sex education and offers free birth control for youth in Oslo thinks sex education should begin while small children are still in local kindergartens.
"I think that the last year of kindergarten is absolutely the time to start providing simple information and answers to the many questions children have," Siv Gamnes, head of the clinic (KSO, Klinikk for seksuell opplysning) told radio station P4 on Tuesday.
"There's a lot of things they're wondering about, and we can answer why boys and girls are different, and how a baby is created," Gamnes added.
Most Norwegian children start attending kindergartens, or day-care centers, as toddlers and continue until formal schooling begins at the age of six. Gamnes doesn't think age five is too early to start talking about sex.
That's because she's experienced a lot of misinformation among the youth who seek help at KSO."By the 10th grade, when many start getting sex education, many of the students are already sitting with information that's wrong," she said. "We have to 'un-teach' them before we can start teaching them."
Starting early with sex education can help prevent children from getting wrong information that they can go around believing for a long time, Gamnes said.
Why not two?
speechless
Wow. I am just speechless.
Geez, what a hardship. We shouldn't tell little kids about the tooth fairy or santa claus either because sooner or later they have to be 'untaught'.
Oh Lord. Protect us from the idiocy of the do-gooders.
You are never too young to learn how to put a condom on a banana...
The only thing that they should be teaching about sex in school is to tell an adult if anyone puts their hands on them.
There was a South Park episode on this topic. Mr. Garrison made sure the Kindergarden class was well versed in all the sexual positions.
Now I know what killed Kenny!
This $h!# makes me sick. Why can't children be allowed to grow up........
I saw a show on the BBC one time where a bunch of pedophiles said they were going to follow in the footsteps of the "gay" sexual deviant movement and make pedophilia acceptable and legal. I guess they are on the move. Why else would a bunch of so-called "adults" want to teach 5 year olds about sex?
It should be at an age-appropriate level. It should be done by parents. It shouldn't be dwelled upon.
Well, I do too if the last year spent in kindergarten is at the age of eleven or twelve. OTOH, perhaps one dumb enough needing to remain in kindergarten that long should NOT be taught sex-ed....
idiots. I didn't even know what sex was until we had required "AIDS/sex-ed" classes at public school. This was around 3rd or 4th grade.
For many of the little ones, innocence is already gone (like 7 yr olds dancing suggestively to Brittney Spears and wearing makeup) and won't be returning. But that's ok, too, because many of these 'lost innocence' kids turn to casual sex to compensate for the closeness and love they crave and there's education and free condoms and std clinics for that, too. (Well, back into my jaded little room now...)
"The pedophiles in Norway must be out of control."
More like they are IN control, setting the agenda of the country. Outrageous!
Kids grow up fast enough now-a-days. My 7-year-old daughter thinks human babies are born from a mom that comes along and lays eggs, and then the dad "fertilizes them" (she watches a fair amount of Animal Planet). She doesn't need to know the details of the sex act at age 7, for crying out loud!
I'll have the "birds and bees" discussion in the next year or two, before the school district gives her THEIR version of the subject.
