Dean: Immigrants are GOP's 2006 foil

Inquirer Staff Writer

Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean told the National Council of La Raza yesterday that he expected the Republican Party to "scapegoat immigrants" during the 2006 election campaign.

In a speech on the last day of the Hispanic advocacy organization's annual gathering, at the Convention Center, Dean said the GOP had tried to generate resentment against blacks in the 2002 elections through the issue of affirmative action and against gays last year by focusing on marriage.

"In 2006, it's going to be immigration," he said. "You wait and see."

As evidence, Dean cited Rep. Thomas G. Tancredo (R., Colo.), who has called for rounding up illegal immigrants and shipping them back home. He also referred to a bill sponsored by House Judiciary Chairman Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R., Wis.) that would make states verify individuals' immigration status before issuing them driver's licenses.

"I don't think the president is a bigot," Dean told reporters at the Convention Center. "But I wish he'd have the courage to stand up to the bigots in his own party."

Dean's Republican counterpart, Ken Mehlman, followed him to the rostrum and did not respond there. But later, he told reporters that the former Vermont governor's comments were "laughable."

Said Mehlman: "It sounds like a good political sound bite, but it's entirely belied by this president, this administration's record."

Mehlman noted that President Bush has created what the party chairman called "the most diverse administration in history," that Bush got more than 40 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2004, and that the party is striving to get a bigger share in the future.

"Your interests are our interests," he told his Hispanic audience during his speech. "Your cause is our cause."

Last month, when first attacked on the immigration issue by the Democratic chairman, Sensenbrenner called the allegations "outrageous" and Tancredo labeled Dean as being out of the political mainstream.

Mehlman did reply to one of the convention's previous speakers, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D, N.Y.). On Monday, she told the La Raza convention that the Bush administration was not doing enough for Hispanic families.

The Republican chairman pointed out that Bush has raised federal spending on education, a key concern of Hispanics, more than had the previous administration, headed by Clinton's husband.

PS: After posting my original reply to you, I read more closely over your post and saw it was a survey. I'd be interested in the methodology and whether they sought him out or whether he voluntarily took the survey, because I wouldn't have clicked on a "hispanic" survey. The important thing here is, that I don't judge non-hispanic whites based on the more vocal non hispanic-white RINOs and liberals anymore than hispanics should be judged based on hthe more vocal hispanic RINOs and liberals. When that guy says "we're taking over", he'd sure as hell better not be including me in that "we", because I probably have more in common with you than I do him.

Alberto Gonzalez undoubtedly supports giving legal status to illegal aliens.

Blame the political panderers and the la raza crowd, but understand that's not the majority of LEGAL, multi-generational U.S. hispanic citizens, most of whom belong to Rotary or the Lions Club or the 4-H Leaders or whatever trade association they work in, but NONE of the people I know who think like me belong to the "hispanic" orgs (even the conservative ones) that are on reporters' Rolodexes.

It's really hard to see that when all the hispanics I come in contact with are illegals, or first generation (I don't know their legal status) hispanics. I grew up in Chicago and knew a couple of guys that I worked with (Florentino Garcia and Jesse Guzman) and they were fairly well assimilated. They were first generation born here. But. That was thirty years ago. Now all I see are the South Americans, who when they refer to "my country", they are referring to Columbia or Peru.

I even asked a guy from Columbia if he would fight for America if we went to war. He told me he would leave right away and go back to Columbia.

While I believe you about your family and friends you have to remember that all I see is the other side.

At this point I have to liken you and those like you (I mean those who believe as you do) to the Muslims that won't speak out against the fanatical Muslims who are killing many people. There is a great silence, or maybe a just a quiet protest, from your faction. I certainly don't see or hear your side. Except here on FreeRepublic.

This is not an insult to you. I am perplexed why your message doesn't go anywhere.

People who say the U.S. has an open border with Mexico are ignorant of what an open border is, and stupid if they think anyone outside their little ping list echo chamber believes them.

I let you slide for personal entertainment's sake and morbid curiosity just to see how low you will go, but now you've gone beyond the pale. Tolerating illegality is wrong. Looking the other way when one's country is suffering a slow-motion invasion by one ethnicity (not race) that resists the laws and cultural ties ALL OTHER IMMIGRANTS MANAGED TO ADAPT TO AND ADOPT is wrong. Intimating that Americans of Latin-American descent are bad Republicans because they oppose illegal immigration is wrong, and frankly stinks of accusations of "race traitor" while Caucasians would be litigated for "hate crimes" if any dared whisper that term anymore (nowadays some really are more equal than others). It's bad enough that you have it in for Tancredo and anyone else who dares to speak the truth while seeking a re-balance of power favoring citizens over dominant special interests - it's far worse that folks like you have had your way so long that Goldwater Conservatives are no longer welcome in the "Big Tent" of Republicanism. That little ping list echo chamber rings mighty loud when semiprivate FReepmail messages are taken into account. They say you're wrong.

Get this - the accusation of racism is quietly becoming a powerless tool in the Liberal arsenal due to it's flagrant overuse. Citizens are waking up to the threat BECAUSE OF people like yourself trotting out the same old Saul Alinsky tactics they remember idiotic radicals using in the 1960s. It may take another twenty years for the hardcore Socialists in educational and political institutions to die off while their masterwork of unlimited immigration inundating our country into paralysis races against the sane's attempts to get it controlled.

And all your work to help those anti-Constitutionalist Socialist vermin get their way is wrong. Your faction of Neo-Cons make conservative-leaning Democrats from the 1980s look like true patriots in retrospect. I will admit that you guys have me totally mystified with your bending over for large business while simultaneously sucking up to Ted Kennedy and that ilk. Should we buy stock in the comany that makes KY? Should we sacrifice all "vaporous values" for legible signatures on donation checks?

It doesn't matter what your reply is. I'll take the advice of Jefferson and Franklin over the likes of Rove and McCain as far as what's good for our this country.

On another note, Missy says if you get s-faced and do the Macarena in front of everyone again she'll make sure you're kicked out of the Little Rock City Club and see that your golf privileges are revoked. Swiping her tampons and holding them over your head while screaming "El Toro" was just going too far.

It is derived from the Frank Herbert "Dune" novels, not Islam, although there are a lot of Arabic words in them. Not being an expert on religions, I believe the mainstream which says the term refers to a spiritual struggle, as all pious people who take their faiths seriously struggle with their faiths and consciences and interactions with their God and with others each and every day. Whenever bloodshed is being preached in the name of a merciful and compassionate God, it is a heresy.

Here is a link to a description of Cong. Tom Tancredo's immigration reform plan: http://insider.washingtontimes.com/articles/normal.php?StoryID=20050718-103434-1003r . Cong. Tancredo's bill will not reward illegal aliens with legal status.

This is not an insult to you. I am perplexed why your message doesn't go anywhere.

I think her message is going farther than you think. Recall that in Arizona 46% of the Hispanic population voted for Proposition 200. I bet there was huge overlap between that 46% and the 40% that voted for President Bush.

That is why I think we should sh*tcan the hispandering strategy and just appeal to Hispanics as if they were the same as all other America loving Americans. The kind of people who would vote for Proposition 200 are not likely to be excited about more freebies for illegals. We are the party of principle, of law and order, of liberty, of individual responsibility, etc. We can reach out to Hispanics without sacrificing our principles or being required to offer them a bunch of freebies or race based special considerations.

But 40% of the Hispanic vote may be the best we can hope for. Everything I read about Hispanic high school graduation rates and college attendance rates suggests that as a group they are going to be near the bottom of the economic totem pole for several more generations. Republicans typically don't do that well with poor people because the Democrats message of freebies and socialism is extremely seductive.

There is a great silence, or maybe a just a quiet protest, from your faction. I certainly don't see or hear your side.

It's difficult to explain and others have asked (and I've shared your sentiments about U.S. muslims), but all I can say for myself is that I don't see illegal immigration as "my" issue to speak out on anymore than it is "your" issue, because I don't identify myself with that group or being a hispanic first and foremost. Now, if suddenly a rogue widget maker were to try to scale the WH fence or make some such trouble, you'd probably see me on Fox News saying, "As a widget maker, I denounce this person and their actions," because it would be more personal to me and because maybe I've been on Fox before defending widget makers on other issues.

Now, when someone is the CEO of CAIR or an imam, that is their #1 role, and they ARE responsible for answering for rogue muslim behavior.

That may not make any sense, but try to think of a characteristic you have that isn't your number 1 role. Let's just say you're a casual Bears fan, but not a fanatic. A fanatic Bears fan shoots up the mall in your town, wearing full Bears regalia, and you start seeing things like "All Bears fans are bad", and the Bears fan association is all over TV making excuses for the guy. You get annoyed just like the rest of your casual Bears fan neighbors, but you don't speak out because your main thing is being a Catholic, Little League parent and a barber. You're cutting some guy's hair one day, and he spots your "Bears" ballcap and asks about the incident. You say that the perp was in the wrong and gave all Bears fans a bad name, and further, you disagree with the apologists. He then berates you for not "speaking out" about it, and you stand there, bewildered, because you never thought of yourself as the "Crazed Bear Fan" spokesman or even as part of the "Crazed Bear Fan" contingent. Probably makes no sense, but I'm on my 3rd glass of wine.

FWIW, if we only had a hand full of key national leaders in strategic locations with your healthy attitude of what is good for this country this problem would go away in a year's time.

Well there it is - too many highschoolers are allowed to drop out or get socially promoted because that's the convenient way out and the ever-disgruntled minority, no matter what it's make-up, is always quick to jump on authority's weakness when allowed to. Fine young people ready to contribute to society (haaack buuulshhht)

That doesn't have any corelation to the "Hispanic" vote for Bush in Arizona. No one has factored in the amount of illegals voting because of the Clinton-pushed Motor Votor laws, let alone counted all the illegals granted citizenship (in stadiums, no less) during his push for reelection. No one seems to have the numbers. I suspect the numbers are too horrifying for belief, thus they stay carefully hidden.

As CJ goes, she is a pro-Palestinian individual defending Islam and open American borders from my observations. Hey, I'm not the moderator, but if I were I would not want to have a record that can be back-tracked illustrating how PC I was while our enemies worked our website while protecting terrorism. But that's just my intollerant little ol' self.

I might be wrong...

Yes, but then I would be in that "strategic" spot because I'm hispanic, and I don't go for offers like that. It's a paradox.

Bears fans? You must not have seen the long-running Saturday Night Live riff on "da Bears". It's a religion for them, one that finds them ingesting great amounts of Polish sausage and beer in their "rituals" as opposed to Catholics taking in a little wafer and wine. For your own safety never mention Mike Ditka nor bring up Mongo McMichaels. Just make soothing sounds while backing away slowly.
