A LITTLE INSIGHT ABOUT JUDGE JUDITH CLEMENT
self ^ | 07-19-05 | cww

Posted on 07/19/2005 1:46:32 PM PDT by CWW

I met Judge Edith Clement several weeks ago at Bill Pryor's investiture on the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. She is extremely sharp. She is also close friends with Judge Pryor, which ought to tell all Freepers about her judicial philosophy. The fact that she personally attended Judge Pryor's investiture and met with him and his family also should reassure most skeptics.

She will be a great pick.

Those are my 2 cents.

Thanks, but you must not know me if you think this is just a peanut gallery observation.

She and Bill Pryor have the same judicial philosophy. If that doesn't mean anything to you, then you're as thick as a post.

Let me get this straight. You put 3 sentences in your "about" page and that somehow makes you more qualified to comment than CWW?

As far as I can tell, CWW's been a positive contributing voice since 1998. Good enough for most of us. It probably wouldn't be too difficult to figure out who CWW is, living in Montgomery Alabama, conservative catholic, just from a passing glance at CWW's posts. The post qualifies as possible primary source material.

Your comments are welcome.

All I want to know about Clement is whether she can read, and interpret, the words in the Constitution as the Framers laid them out, or will she make up law as she goes along. If she makes it up we're right back where we were with O'Connor.

In other words does she believe in a "living" Constitution that has no intrinsic value, or does she believe in a "fixed" Constitution that affords equal rights to all.

ABCNews is saying she is not his choice. But they are not always right, are they?

She's pro-abort. That will never fly.

She is not a pro-abort. See mad one statement that all conservative nominees have made regarding Roe v. Wade and that is that it is settled law until the Supreme Court states otherwise.

If this is an accurate quote or in the correct context, then I'm not so sure.

"Clement is known as a conservative and a strict constructionist in legal circles. But she stated in her 2001 Senate hearing that the Supreme Court "has clearly held that the right to privacy guaranteed by the Constitution includes the right to have an abortion" and that "the law is settled in that regard."

Unless you are a close friend, collegue or family member of Clement, you do not know her position on abortion.

I think she would be a great nominee.

On other posts, she stood up to the Democratic Senators who wanted to prohibit Judges going to "sponsored" events. A bill, pushed by John Kerry, should give one no doubt.

Plus, she does Admiralty and is a Federalist. I agree. She most likely IS a sharp cookie.

How do you parse a statement like that? Are you telling me the other potential nominees have been that explicit?

Theres reason why she make conservatives nervous. If youre not nervous, you dont care about this topic.
