Complete BS. Stalin and Mao specifically targetted SE Asia as a major Communist expansion zone. Ya Commie appeaser! STFU!

That's a bit exagerated. Certainly, like the Communist Red Chinese, Vietnam has seen the value of allowing industry to interact with the West, and to allow partnerships with Western companies. But the Communist Party still controls the political space of Vietnam, still tortures, maims and kills people and still holds the goal of the defeat of the West.

It was a noble cause, and over 70% of Vietnam veterans (myself included) have said they were glad they served there even knowing how the war would end (over 80% of us are proud of our service). It accomplished a lot -- ask Lee Kwan Yu of Singapore who agrees.
Shame on you for besmirching the obituary of a great soldier.

The military did not lose the conflict in SE Asia. The government did. The left-wing, anti-military, Kennedy/Kerry-loving Congress did.
To: zarf
You can thank John F Kennedy for our being there....and his fat sob brother Ted for making it political.
To: JellyJam; Dont Mention the War
Few people have a field command as long as I did, he said. They put me over there and they forgot about me. But I was there seven days a week, working 14 to 16 hours a day. I have no apologies, no regrets. I gave my very best efforts, he added. Ive been hung in effigy. Ive been spat upon. You just have to let those things bounce off. Later, after many of the wounds caused by the divisive conflict began to heal, Westmoreland led thousands of his comrades in the November, 1982, veterans march in Washington to dedicate the Vietnam War Memorial. He called it one of the most emotional and proudest experiences of my life.God bless General William Westmoreland. May he rest in peace.

Anyone have a recollection of Westmoreland being furious about having to share battle plans with the UN before proceeding?

56,000 dead. For nothing.
History has proven that statement idiotic. Our 10 year fight in Vietnam forced world communism to focus its resources in SE Asia. Had we simply allowed them to win in 1965, those same resources would have been spent making mischief in a dozen other places around the world.
If not for Vietnam, 1989 may never have happened.

We should not have been there in the first place. It is amazing to me that all these years later, we are still fighting John Kerry and the MSM disinformation machine about Viet Nam. As a Freeper, you should know better.

There were tremendous efforts exerted by courageous young men and women in both efforts......however, I wouldn't crow too much about a victory that I would liken to Notre Dame bringing in Joe Montana to then whip up on a high school team.

" very good book on the subject is by Michael Lind called: "Vietnam: A Necessary War."
Another is "Strategy for Defeat" by Admiral Sharp. Fished my copy out of the trash.
