Police: Boy pushed wheelchair as uncle wielded knife in bar Kristen Garrett, Times Staff 07/16/2005
ELLWOOD CITY - An Ellwood City man faces charges after he got his 11-year-old nephew to push him in his wheelchair as he threatened bar patrons with a knife, police said.
Borough police were called at 12:09 a.m. Sunday to the West End Cafe at 1212 Lawrence Ave. on a report of a man inside with a knife. Police said John Alan Pounds, 41, of 1585 Fox St. was outside the bar in his wheelchair when police arrived.
An officer had been to the bar earlier when patrons called police to say Pounds was causing a disturbance. Police escorted Pounds home, but he returned later with his young nephew.
According to the police report:
When Pounds returned to the bar with his nephew, he had a 12-inch knife and made his nephew push the wheelchair toward patrons as Pounds threatened them. He made his nephew push him because the wheelchair battery had gone dead. Two patrons wrested the knife away from him.
Pounds was highly intoxicated and slurring his words, police said, when they tried to arrest him, he yelled obscenities at them, exposed himself and committed a lewd act.
When police tried to put Pounds in handcuffs, he swung his fists at them, spit on them and tried to bite them, according to the report. Pounds then yelled that he has AIDS.
Two officers suffered minor injuries in the struggle, police said.
Pounds was taken by ambulance to Jameson Hospital in New Castle for a mental health evaluation.
A warrant for Pounds was filed Monday at District Judge Samuel A. Battaglia's office in Ellwood City. He is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated harassment by a prisoner, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault, making terroristic threats, indecent exposure, resisting arrest, corruption of minors, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.
As of Friday afternoon, police said they had not arrested Pounds and were unsure whether he was still hospitalized.
Don't blame the kid. He was just complying with the ADA.
Nothing like a little quality time with the extended family.
Jay Leno will joke about this one.
"He made his nephew push him because the wheelchair battery had gone dead."
This should have been his cue to give up and go home!! LOL
With a guy in a wheelchair?
Two officers suffered minor injuries in the struggle, police said. Not at all suprising. Even assuming he no longer had the knife at this point, they were probably trying to subdue him without putting him on the ground like they would normally do. He probably has very strong arms and may have been drunk enough to bite the cops. With a guy in a wheelchair?
