For all you dog lovers like me, here is a great web site on military dogs. Our guys (and gals) over in Iraq and Afghanistan are doing a lot to save dogs (and cats).
http://www.militarymascots.org/
It costs a lot of money to ship a dog to the US, so they welcome donations. Also, they need bulletproof vests for the military dogs.

Dogs are considered to be bad luck, and among the more fervent muslims, black dogs are believed to carry evil spirits.
My son in Iraq found kids swinging a puppy around by the tail once. The nearby religious folk said nothing, leaving it to him to tell them to knock it off. He felt like he learned a lot about islam on that day.

I saw a Saluki bitch with pups who came in to our warehouse off the desert seeking a place to house her pups. She looked really bad, but after a few good meals she came around. She developed in to a beautiful blonde dog, very graceful with a long silky coat.

You got some answers, so I'll just post a pic of how they seem to bring out the best in each other.

That is so sweet, I can see where it would be a great moral booster.

Dogs were holy in Zorasterianism, the religion of Persia (modern Iran) before the Muslim takeover. So love of dogs has a connotation in Iran that it may not have elsewhere - of preferring Persian nationalist definitions of identity over Muslim ones.

Muslims are not allowed to touch dogs Well, there goes reason #547 not to convert to Islam. I am frequently contaminated by happy dog slobber.

When I was stationed in Turkey back in the 80's we had to strays on post that we had adopted, Bugsy and Lady. Lady was an Anatolian shepherd and was very strong. She had been abused by local Turks as a puppy and they had cut her ears off. Both her and Bugsy (who looked a bit like a skinny German shepherd) were very protective of us GI's and absolutely hated the Turks. I think Lady passed away a couple years after I left and Bugsy was adopted by a GI and brought to the states when the base was closed a few years later. When I was there they would accompany us on our PT runs and a couple times they chased off wild dogs that were stalking us.

It may well be an urban or suburban legend, but I do notice that when I'm walking Bubba, people in robes tend to cross the street to avoid him.
It may be that they just think he's scary since he's black and weighs just under 100 pounds.
He's not scary, unless you hate being kissed by long pink tongues.

"Please don't insult dogs by comparing them to that humanoid creature.'Excellent point, I'm glad my dog doesn't read.

There was an Egyptian Muslim who came to our home years ago. He wanted to pray and noticed our dog. Well, our dog does come into out house and asked if there was a room thge dog did not go into. We did not want him to go upstairs (which our dog does not go) so we said the den (into which our dog does go).
In went the muslim to pray...
I wonder if Allah will mind?

Years ago I lived in Amsterdam, Holland. As some of you may know, Amsterdam has a significant Muslim population.
Muslims don't like dogs, it's true. This is even more pronounced during Ramadan, when touching a dog is like touching a menstruating woman for them - you're befouled, can't finish the holy holiday.
So, of course, it was with amusement that I would board the standing-room-only tram with THIS:

Such consternation sent my way in Turkish, Arabic and Moroccan. Amusing. I wanted to get him a T-shirt that said in Arabic script, "I Love Ramadan" but couldn't bring myself to do it...
