Accused HIV spreader puts Atlanta's gay community on edge
The Associated Press - ATLANTA
Garry Wayne Carriker was a fourth-year medical student with a charming style that he worked to his advantage around the city's bustling gay scene.
But just months after he would have graduated from Emory University Medical School, Carriker's career is on hold as he sits in jail, awaiting trial on sex-crime charges that have put Atlanta's gay community on edge.
His crime? Police say the 26-year-old knew he had the HIV virus but went ahead with unprotected consensual sex with another man without warning him. And then, when Carriker was released on bond in March, he was arrested on similar charges in a nearby county. Twice.
Carriker's case is one of the first in Georgia prosecuted on charges of knowingly transmitting the HIV virus through consensual sex. It brings the state into the vortex of an ongoing legal debate that pits a growing public health crisis against the bounds of privacy.
Prosecutors have dusted off a rarely used Georgia law to charge Carriker with felony reckless misconduct, which could keep him in prison for 10 years.
"It's like shooting bullets into the crowd," said Atlanta attorney Adam Jaffe, who is arguing a civil lawsuit against Carriker. "Eventually someone's going to get killed."

"Garry Wayne Carriker was a fourth-year medical student"
Someone who knew better. He ignored the medical facts and chose to live a life of reckless behavior.
Glad he's in jail. He would have been a rotten doctor!!!

Might I add all STDs and other diseases that can be spread person to person.

Oh good, now they're going to put him in prison where
he can spread the disease much farther.

I thought after one graduated from one of the military academies one had to serve 5 years.
How did he get out and go to medical school?
I'm also surprised the aclu hasn't taken up his "cause".

odd. I am given to understand that there is a well-established subset of the gay bed-hopping scene called "bug chasers": These deliberately bed sex-partners known to have incurable and lethal diseases.
I am surprised this fellow faces prosecution, and I very much doubt the gay bed-hopping scene is in any way truly "disturbed" by his actions.

Interesting. I wonder what branch of medicine this honorable man was studying. I certainly wouldn't want to, for instance, undergo surgery if the surgeon was HIV+, would you? I mean, even restaurant workers have to get TB tests, for gosh sakes.
So if an HIV+ individual goes around spreading the wealth, in GA at least it is considered a crime. I think that's reasonable.
Freepmail me if you want on/off this pinglist.

If Public Funds are used to pay for an HIV test then the Public has the right to know the result of it's test.According to this logic, then all tax forms and military records of any person should be public information, as well as CIA and FBI documents (all of those are publicly funded).

Bummer.
Gee, so much for the "loving, tender, kind-hearted" homosexual community. (I wonder if he voted republican last time? Everybody "knows" the demo's are nice and forgiving.)
Guy sounds like he caught AIDS through his own foolish/stupid behavior....
Then got mad and sought revenge on the people (fellow homosexuals) who gave it to him. Throw him in jail for his felonies.

Such activity is clearly a crime--attempted murder? Maybe. David Brudnoy, deceased gay Boston radio talker, admitted that he did the same thing. As far as I know, he was never punished for it.
It's time for such individuals to go to a special quarantine jail. Anyone who has demonstrated that they are incapable of living among civilized society without trying to kill people needs to be put away.
