Accused HIV spreader puts Atlanta's gay community on edge
The Associated Press - ATLANTA
Garry Wayne Carriker was a fourth-year medical student with a charming style that he worked to his advantage around the city's bustling gay scene.
But just months after he would have graduated from Emory University Medical School, Carriker's career is on hold as he sits in jail, awaiting trial on sex-crime charges that have put Atlanta's gay community on edge.
His crime? Police say the 26-year-old knew he had the HIV virus but went ahead with unprotected consensual sex with another man without warning him. And then, when Carriker was released on bond in March, he was arrested on similar charges in a nearby county. Twice.
Carriker's case is one of the first in Georgia prosecuted on charges of knowingly transmitting the HIV virus through consensual sex. It brings the state into the vortex of an ongoing legal debate that pits a growing public health crisis against the bounds of privacy.
Prosecutors have dusted off a rarely used Georgia law to charge Carriker with felony reckless misconduct, which could keep him in prison for 10 years.
"It's like shooting bullets into the crowd," said Atlanta attorney Adam Jaffe, who is arguing a civil lawsuit against Carriker. "Eventually someone's going to get killed."

You reap what you sow.
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
Why did they arrest him? He was doing the community a service.
What, like something's changed? They must know that unprotected sex is likely to get them HIV.
And that must be some nasty sowing in the end.....
The typical "bustling gay scene" - merchants of death who are manic over their sex organs and the bullets they fire into a crowd. Too bad this gay didn't receive counseling after he was recruited or abused by some older male in his life. Who knows how many lives would be spared from AIDS.
I find it hard to believe that felony reckless misconduct is a rarely used law that had to be dusted off to prosectue this murderer.
I'm sure Jimah Carter would be Proud...

On the edge of their seats?
But... but... I thought that gays were just like the rest of us -- raising kids in long-term monogamous relationships, decorating their homes, etc.
"It's like shooting bullets into the crowd"
More like spurting bullets.

That'l do.
Deserves repeating.
If Public Funds are used to pay for an HIV test then the Public has the right to know the result of it's test.
The person being tested is just receiving a gift from the taxpayer in being told the result of the test.
People do not have a right to receive secret gifts from the government.
If we do, everyone who decides not to get HIV tested should receive the cash equivalent of the cost of the test - and be free to spend it on a secret gift. That is if you believe everyone should be treated equally under the law.
LOL!
