Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair said Muslims could do more to help find those plotting further atrocities.
"We have a moment now in which we can engage with the Muslim community and move them from what could be described as a bit of denial into active engagement around counterterrorism," Mr. Blair told BBC TV.
"Who are the preachers of hate? Who are the people who are looking to groom bombers?" Mr. Blair asked, adding that a number of British Muslims had been to Iraq and training camps abroad.
"The Muslim community somewhere will know who these people are. We've now got to engage with them so that they give us the information," Mr. Blair said.
Moderate Muslim groups already cooperate with police on security issues but acknowledge that many alienated young Muslims have drifted away and become vulnerable to indoctrination.
"There is a deep sense of alienation in parts of the community, from poverty, from unemployment, from poor education," said Daud Abdullah, assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), the country's largest Islamic organization.
Shortly before Britain's May election, the MCB called a press conference to encourage Muslims to go to the polls, but the event was disrupted by a radical Islamist group calling for a boycott instead.
"They want to isolate themselves. They want young men to opt out of the political process and to live on the edges," said Mr. Abdullah said.
"We on the council believe that is dangerous, because you become vulnerable. You become a potential prey to people who espouse violence and projects of violence."

Why do they need to be asked? I think we know the answer.
I happen to believe that the parents of these killers really did NOT know a thing about their sons' activities. Most certainly that is part of the training for these duped suiciders - do NOT tell anyone about your "mission!"
So, "engaging" with people in Muslim communities isn't going to yield a whole lot of information.
As Robert Klein Engler says in his new chronwatch.com editorial (http://www.chronwatch.com/content/contentDisplay.asp?aid=15711&catcode=13) (which I just posted here on FR), the only true solution will be to deport all Muslims from all western countries. Period - end of discussion.........and I believe that it will eventually come to that, but only after a couple of million Americans (or Brits, Frenchmen, Germans...) die in a few appalling attacks.
It will take such carnage for the current liberal appeasers to wake up.
Thanks for your remarks, as always, John!

I also happen to agree with this analysis. It's a conundrum. Parents raise their children with the virus incubating in their minds, by exposing them to the Islamic culture. They're surprised and dismayed when spiritual leaders awaken the virus for two reason: first, they refuse to admit that their culture is malignant. Second, they didn't necessarily ask their children to be devout or to hate the west.
The key to understanding this phenomenon is to realize the Islam is one of the most anti-democratic cultures ever produced in the history of mankind. We can see why, and it does not surprise us. But Muslims living here and enjoying the benefits and benevolence of western culture can be clueless as to why their base culture is incompatible with ours. Why would they dislike something that is so deeply a part of their world view?
British official tells Muslims to stand up to terrorism
This would amount to 'ethnic cleansing', a concept abhorrent to Americans five years ago. Insulated by two oceans we have been naive about the depravity of Islam and the disgusting consequences of allowing their 'believers' to live among us. But we are finally learning what has been known in Europe and Asia for many centuries ... send them back to the Islamic hell holes they came from. It is the only solution.
Of course islamics could do more but they won't because that would be helping non-islamics. And that the practicing islamics won't do. Prime example is the middle east. Surrounding islamic countries are 640 times the size of Israel with oil rich resources and land aplenty. Do you think they would take in the palis--their own brother and sisters? Absolutely not. That would be helping the Jews--a non-islamic people. They prefer to wring land and money concessions from the western world and Israel so that the islamics won't be put out in any way. So the islamics will never help non-islamics.

Sadly Mr. Blair is still in denial.
I think it is time to come out FOR profiling...and quit acting so PC...
We need to tell the Muslim community that they will be profiled...
AND, if they get mad enough about being profiled, THEN, maybe they will start standing up and denouncing what the Islamofascits are doing...Until the Muslim community is PERSONALLY made uncomfortable, and TOLD they will be watched, they will never stick their necks out for anyone, here or any other country.
Terrorists must stand up to terrorists. I suppose that makes sense in today's world.
"Their [Fairyland?] Guidelines state: "The word 'terrorist' itself can be a barrier to understanding... We should try to avoid the term, while we report the facts as we know them."

***Somebody said, "We cannot fight terrorism with pacifism."
