WASHINGTON - President Bush gave the nation several clues Saturday about the person he will nominate for a seat on the Supreme Court, except for the most important one a name.
In his weekly radio address, Bush said his eventual nominee will be a "fair-minded individual who represents the mainstream of American law and American values."
His candidate also "will meet the highest standards of intellect, character and ability and will pledge to faithfully interpret the Constitution and laws of our country," the president said.
"Our nation deserves, and I will select, a Supreme Court justice that Americans can be proud of," he said, without revealing the name that many are anxious to hear.
Bush also discussed his recent meeting with Senate leaders of both parties to discuss the nomination and confirmation process for a replacement for Sandra Day O'Connor. The first woman to serve on the high court, O'Connor announced July 1 that she is stepping down after 24 years.

""Right, the theory that Bush is just placating the leftists while actually planning the ol' conservative bait and switch at the last minute.
When he said he was going to burden us with a money hungry prescription drug plan that is exactly what he did.
When he said he was going to throw loads of our cash at public education with no means of accountability that's exactly what he did.
And when his statement implies that he plans to make the judicial branch nothing more than an enforcer of popular will I'm going to believe that as well.""
Here is the problem with your post. The first 2 promises by Bush were precise and stated, the last one is just something youve made up based on your own lack of confidence in the President.
There are very few conservatives here, there are a lotta wannabe conservatives. A Republican doesn't automatically fall into the category of conservative and the President is a perfect example of that. The fact that so many ordinary Republicans think of themselves as "conservatives" simply means they bought into the leftist propaganda that anybody to the right of Barbara Boxer is a conservative.
What's entertaining about this thread is how the slobbering Bush haters are crawling out of their holes to slam him, based on what amounts to the President saying he's going to select a human being for the Supreme Court.
I don't see anything here, so I'll wait to criticize him until after he nominates someone that we don't like.
Of course, if that happens, then at that time he will have written off the party's majority in 06, so I'm hoping for the best.
I do think he is a great President, who has dealt with a lot in his four years. I prefer to comment on actual actions, instead of inventing things to complain about through insane word-parsing.
I am very apprehensive about potential picks, but this article/statement tell us absolutely nothing.
As usual, Dane strikes again.
Oh, they were here a lot faster than that. Interesting how the Bushbashers need very little provocation to spew, and they all threaten with not voting in '06. The logic being, "I hate non-conservatives, so I will make sure liberals gain power."
Definitely a hint. No computer-programs will be nominated, and a strong likelyhood that the nominee will come from this solar system.
""BUSHBOT!!!""
Id prefer to have confidence in the Pres potential picks than mope around and get my opinion from losers like The New American....my question is to those on the fringe, when Bush doesnt sell out his base on a SCOTUS pick, will the fringe right, just to save face have to oppose his pick no matter who it is? SO their ultimate choice will be to look like fools by accepting that his pick will be an originalist, or become marginalized by continuing to throw a tantrum
The joke of all time: the definition of "mainstream" by the Dims
Mainstream = abortion on demand, higher taxes, redistribution of wealth, appeasement, social engineering, gay marriage, giving aid and comfort to the enemy
Too bad you don't fancy hardnosed Constitutional constructionists, laddiebuck, because that's to whom you're posting. I've just had quite enough of 'moderate' Pubbies, and way more than enough of bait-and-switch.
You are right, nothing to see here. But, it's sooo much more fulfilling to rip into the President based on absolutely nothing than to show the restraint of a conservative.
""Republicans think of themselves as "conservatives" simply means they bought into the leftist propaganda that anybody to the right of Barbara Boxer is a conservative.""
thats Rubbish. Olympia Snowe is to the right of Barbara Boxer and she is no conservative or even mainstream republican
NO matter who he picks the carping on both sides will be intense.
I made that mainstream recording yesterday. It's a product of http://www.rightalk.com. You got a sneak preview :)
Just another day on Free Republic.
IMHO, it's more important to send "a message" that the (R)'s cannot continue to rely on our support, without doing what we SENT THEM THERE TO DO.
If this means "President Hillary" and loss of the Senate, so be it.
I mean..at this point, what is the difference? There ain't much.
No, it's not rubbish. The left has redefined "conservative" to mean virtually any republican. They relocated "conservative" from Phyllis Schlafly and Paul Weyrich to mean any middle-of-the-road republican. That means anybody right of that is the "extreme right wing." Just because you don't see it that way doesn't mean it isn't true.
