...Richard Gere of "The Jackal" fame elaborated: "If you can see [the terrorists] as a relative who's dangerously sick and we have to give them medicine, and the medicine is love and compassion. There's nothing better."
Cher often sings of losers and so drew on her artistic insight to share a complex portrait of the president: "I don't like Bush. I don't trust him. I don't like his record. He's stupid. He's lazy."
What's so disturbing about our leftist celebrities lecturing us on what has gone wrong after September 11? Nothing, as long as we realize why they do it.
Entertainers wrongly assume their fame, money and influence arise from broad knowledge rather than natural talent, looks or mastery of a narrow skill.
In fact, what do a talented Richard Gere, Robert Redford and Madonna all have in common besides loudly blasting the current administration? They either dropped out of, or never started, college. Cher may think George Bush is "stupid," but she -- not he -- didn't finish high school....

What's disturbing is
they use the job -- being known --
to preach politics.
How would they enjoy,
say, going out to eat and
having the waitress
lecture them about
her politics? These damn stars
are just thoughtless nuts.
or, more likely, a machinery engaged in the promotion of some seemingly attractive feature or gift.

OK, so they didn't complete formal education. Neither did J.R. Simplot or Albert Einstein -- don't make me get out the list.
It isn't their lack of education that makes them idiots, it's their abundance of hubris.
Ah yes, I can see it now. "Oh please Mr. Terrorist, we really love you", as the terrorist/bomber sprints towards you.
Victor Davis Hanson Ping!
I love the way he mows these Tinseltown Towers of Intellect down to size.
Lazy??? What a stupid b*tch this wretch is. Why run laps around Camp David when you can liposuction your ass so much that you can't sit down for six months, and inject your lips with plastic sh*t until they look like two Goodyear blimps, eh Cher?
I think there's some merit to Gere's comments. I think speaking a a Christian we cannot lose site of the fact we should show sinner compassion, not understanding, but love. Where I think Gere goes off track though is that he implies that in doing so we should not do everything we can to protect our loved ones and countrymen against attacks by terrorists. Though many died in Iraq really it is a mission of love in that we are rebuilding their country, removing an opressive evil regime and giving them a westernized market, infrastructue, and rule of law. Those are the tools that will help Iraq free itself from the rule of evil. It is love and compassion for our enemies.
VDH misses one important point. Follow the money. These are not just Americans, they are international stars with a worldwide audience. When you take a look at revenue from Hollywood movies and American artist music CDs, much of it comes from international sales. It pays to be anti-American or at least, anti-Bush.
This is why people don't pay Cher or any of the other celebrities to talk. There are even children in some high schools that have a higher IQ capacity than the majority of the people in Hollywood.
The Left DESTROYED the American theatre.
That's a very valid point...and another reason to stop forgiving the debt of some of those anti-American countries that have nearly bled us dry.
"OK, so they didn't complete formal education."
I think their lack of education is PRECISELY the point when they themselves talk POINTEDLY about the man's intelligence. They say Bush is stupid, lazy, a monkey, not as smart as Kerry, and so on. But never mind that they as a group have little to brag about when it comes to formal education and when they comport themselves in crass and vulgar ways. Bush does indeed have an impressive formal education; many entertainers do not. A formal education and intelligence are not one and the same, but the two definitely overlap. A formal education is still, despite all the problems, a pretty good indicator of intelligence.
or more likely ...
Return on their casting-couch investment.
Perfect way to start my Saturday morning.
If you can see the terrorists as an infection that is polluting the species, and we have to eradicate them, and the medicine is tincture of fulminating Semtech, there's nothing more gratifying than seeing some raghead explode in a pink mist.
Hanson and Steyn vs Hollywood. Talk about an intelligence gap.
I am remiss...
a formal education is a good indicator of complicity with cultural norms. Its correlation with intelligence is slightly above random.
"a formal education is a good indicator of complicity with cultural norms. Its correlation with intelligence is slightly above random."
A vacuous statement. You're just arguing against commonsense. College level degrees in such areas as mathematics, medicine, classical languages are, self-evidently, good indicators of intelligence. It is highly unlikely that a stupid person, a slow or dull person, can understand advanced math or the workings of the brain or speak ancient Greek. Some people might come to understand these things without a formal education because they are of course intelligent to begin with....but this doesn't negate the fact that people who come to understand these things BY WAY OF a formal education are intelligent to begin with as well. The difference here is that Bush, for example, can give evidence of his intelligence because it has been tested by way of a formal education. Cher and her peers can spit venom forever but they typically have little or no paperwork to show.
What on earth "complicity with cultural norms" means is beyond me except that it sounds strangely like Afrocentric gibberish. Learning a mathematical formula has nothing to do with cultural norms; a mathematical formula is universally true. So, what cultural norm am I yielding to when I learn something that is universal?
Regarding your statement, "Its correlation with intelligence is slightly above random." Nonsense.
