Judge Rehnquist said he wants to put to rest the rumor that he is retiring. He is going to serve out his term.

Seeing how his "term" is a lifetime appointment... is he saying he'll die in office?

Very selfish move. He's going to be gone in a few years either way... holding out a few more years will just give the Dems a chance to name his successor.

In other words, he's not the one that will choose the time of his retirement.

I think there ought to be a term of service for the Court, say, maybe twelve years; and after that one can remain on the bench as a federal judge, but not on the SCOTUS.

Judges tend to get to thinking of themselves as godlike,
instead of legal clerks, when they have sat for too long
on any court.

Counting on a GOP defeat in 2008?

The grim reaper may well relieve us of yet another judge that KNOWS he is indispensable.

What if he waits a few weeks or months?

Would you give up your job tomorrow because someone told you they wanted it? Nuts.

They should serve 20 years not one day longer.

I don't think we have to worry. I think the chance that Rehnquist wont retire before the end of 2007 is next to nothing. He loves the court, and justices usually don't leave unless they have to. Many justices stay on the court until they die. Oliver Wendell Holmes stayed on the court until age 91. But I don't think Rehnquist will stay on until 2008 and thus until the next president comes in.
