Sailors Support 'Gifts From the Home Front'

WASHINGTON, July 14, 2005 – Sailors from Strategic Communications Wing One recently donated their time and energy in an effort to support troops overseas. Petty Officer First Class John Blaise with the Wing’s Mobile Operations Division spearheaded the “Gifts from the Home Front” fundraiser and organized the all day event.

Blaise and other sailors from the Wing’s Mobile Operations Division collected monetary donations from Tinker Air Force Base Exchange customers, and used 100 percent of the donations to purchase “Gifts From the Home Front” gift certificates for the troops from the Army and Air Force Exchange Service Web site.

The Red Cross will then deliver these gift certificates to deployed men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Troops can use these certificates to purchase health and beauty items, pre-paid calling cards, food, music, DVD players, and many other morale boosting items. Certificates are redeemable at any BX/PX store, the Exchange Catalog, or the Exchange Online Store.

The sailors in the division received $2,410 in donations from the Tinker community, which enabled them to purchase 120 gift certificates valued at $20 each.

Blaise, who spent six months in Iraq with his Seabee Unit helping set up a fleet hospital, knows firsthand how lonely and arduous life can be overseas. The amount of money raised helped him to realize others cared as well.

“It has renewed my feeling that there are many people out in the community that support all the servicemembers with their fight on the global war on terrorism,” Blaise said.

Chief Petty Officer Dannie Hansen, the divisions Leading Chief Petty Officer said, “Efforts like this, truly display the character of the department personnel and the outstanding leadership being provided by our First Class Petty Officers.”
