WASHINGTON Senate Democrats on Thursday pushed for legislation to deny security clearances to officials who disclose the identify of an undercover agent, an action that clearly responds to the controversy surrounding top White House aide Karl Rove (search).
Sens. Harry Reid or Nevada, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, Joe Biden of Delaware and Dick Durbin of Illinois were offering the amendment as an add-on to the Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill now being debated in the Senate.
"No federal employee who discloses, or has disclosed, classified information, including the identity of a covert agent of the Central Intelligence Agency, to a person not authorized to receive such information shall be permitted to hold a security clearance for access to such information," the amendment language reads.
The effort is one of many taken by Democrats in light of confirmation that White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rove discussed the identity of Valerie Plame (search) with a reporter for Time magazine in July 2003.
Despite the brouhaha, Bush gave his deputy chief of staff a visual show of support Thursday morning when the two departed the White House for Indiana. The president emerged from the Oval Office side by side with Rove, whereas Rove usually shuffles behind him. The two chatted as they walked towards Marine One together and both appeared very jovial.

Hmmmmmmm....I wonder if they are going to insist on a law that a young crazed intern stalker busy giving BJs in the Oval Office is not allowed to have TOP SECRET CLEARANCE at the Pentagon. That seems like a good law.
why don't they ask for the expedited sentencing and removal of Sandy Burglars clearance?
They better be careful playing with that live wire....or they'll get zapped.
Not only did JF'n 'out' someone just recently, but he also 'outed' the entire American government in 1970, in his illegal talks with the North Vietnamese government, his encouragement of the protests at home that prolonged the war, (probably leading to additional thousands of deaths of US servicemen,) and eventually led to the US pulling out .
LTPing - think Kerry should lose his security clearance?
Committee Chairman Richard Lugar, R-Ind., and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., both mentioned a name, Fulton Armstrong, that had not previously come up in public accounts of the intelligence flap. It is not clear whether Armstrong is the undercover officer, but an exchange between Kerry and Bolton suggests that he may be.

Good one!
If this is true, then it's obvious that nobody broke the current law either. So why has the prosecutor taken 2 years? Partisan witch hunt?
Also, the Dems and the media continually repeat the "Bush promised to fire the leaker" line, but I can't find anywhere where he said that. The only quote I've seen from Bush was: "If anybody broke the law, they will be dealt with". To me, that doesn't mean he would fire them or that he would even be the one dealing with them.
Does anybody know of a more specific quote where Bush promised to fire the leaker?
No to mention, Rove did NOTHING WRONG!!!
I'm thinking a number of Senators would be thown off Committees too
The Republicans should support this and then deny Leaky Leahy access to classified information. Kerry was well, given that he told about his classified trip into Cambodia, even though we all know it never happened.
That is the current law!! It becomes deactivated.
Unless Joe's holding company had contracts with the Government involving classified work he probably didn't hold a clearance.
"No federal employee or elected official who discloses, or has disclosed, or who's staff discloses classified information, including the identity of a covert agent of the Central Intelligence Agency, to a person not authorized to receive such information shall be permitted to hold a security clearance for access to such information,"
I thought that earlier...glad you posted it.
People in Hell want ice water.
again... is anyone getting just kinda pissed at this whole thing. I cant even turn the TV on I can only believe that people think that Dems are crazy and excessive. They have asked to fire Rumsfeld, Rice, Rove (a couple of times), Cheney, Delay, Lott.... Wonder what they would do if something really happened. hmmm. Like a terror attack let me guess FIRE BUSH. Anyway ranting. But Im becoming more and more pissed this is not funny anymore!!! Am I by myself
You are not alone.
