Maybe but I know of several refineries in the Houston area that had crews standing by , on the clock, just in case.

Yeah, I guess it was prudent to take precautions, but honestly, some tin-foilers just went way overboard with it.

Let us not forget freeze warnings as well for refineries in the Houston area, made plenty of overtime on them as well.

What's the scoop on Emily now? Even if I don't understand it, I love to read the technical details and explanations.

I think the only way that happens is if it spends quite some time on the Yucatan, emerging as a Cat 1 or less.

Weather outlook for the Houston & surrounding area.

Flood Watch for all of Southeast Texas through tonight. A pesky upper system continues to sit over Texas and with the aid of abundant tropical moisture and daytime heating, strong storms will continue over the area through Saturday.

A ridge is expected to build over the state beginning Sunday and that should help taper off the rain chances.

Never mind. Don't download that strike probability map. It's ghosting worse all the time, and may show Emily striking the other side of the planet by tomorrow.

So apparently Kevlar screens don't prevent broken windows and water damage, just catastrophic damage.

From: http://www.stormshutters.com/hurricane-screens/wind-abatement.html

"What about my windows and doors that are not in a lanai?

The Storm Catcher wind-abatement system can be used on any window or door with the understanding that you may have a broken window but your home will be protected against catastrophic loss. Yes, you may have to wipe up some water and clean up the broken glass but your house will not be subjected to the huge internal pressure build up that could cause the total loss of your home."

It does look like it's moving out of that shearing environment. There's no reason why Emily should not maintain Cat 3 status or more until Monday. The Yucatan would obviously degrade her.

I'm sticking with my plywood for those windows. The screens are expensive and I hope to upgrade the plywood to the metal window guards over time.

Good point about the fires, not too many fire departments will venture out during a storm.

I have always wanted to make some with the crosses cut into them. They would work as hand holes, let in light, and give you a full field of fire if the looters come.

Everyone I know who uses diesel claims it will go bad.

I have read and participated in some excellent diesel storage threads on other forums. Very few people seem to have encountered real problems, although most use fuel conditioners and stabilizers and everyone keeps plenty of filters on hand. Some people are of the opinion that bacterial over-growth can occur but it seems to be uncommon. Bactericides are available but I have never used one.

Thanks. I don't really see it as a big problem as I don't store much of it. When I had a lot of farm equipment, we used it fast enough that long term storage was never a problem.

I will get some spare filters thanks to the yours and others suggestions on this thread.
