Campaign targets county seal

Restoring a tiny cross to Los Angeles County's official seal is the goal of a signature-gathering campaign announced Monday that aims to put the issue to a public vote.

Supporters -- including Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn and county Supervisor Mike Antonovich -- said they have already collected 20,551 signatures in recent weeks, and hope to gather 171,000 by Sept. 26 to qualify their initiative for the county's June 2006 ballot.

An attempt earlier this year to qualify a similar initiative for the countywide November 2005 ballot fell well short of its goal.

In fact, this is the third attempt to bring the issue to a public vote since the county Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 in 2004 to have the seal redesigned without the cross, noted David Hernandez, who has organized all three attempts.

The supervisors acted after the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California threatened to sue the county over the cross, which ACLU officials said constitutes an endorsement of Christianity and violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

Hahn and Antonovich said they believe the latest signature-gathering effort has a better chance of success than the previous drives.

Hahn, whose district includes the Harbor Area, said the "Save The Seal" campaign stands to gain from a recent Supreme Court decision allowing Austin, Texas, to keep a display of the Ten Commandments on government property.

I don't know what good this is going to do.

Remember the words of State Sen. Gilbert Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, regarding the peoples rejection of gay marriage:

"The people have spoken. They have spoken. But people aren't always right."

So take that, pissants.

I guess I better put a /sarc tag here.
