LONDON (AFP) - Prime Minister Tony Blair proposed a mixed package of dialogue and tougher measures to combat what he branded the "evil ideology" embraced by the alleged Muslim extremists behind the London terror attacks.
Blair told parliament his government would consider tougher action against people who incite or instigate terrorism, including tighter entry procedures, as well as try to promote the voice of moderate Islam at home and abroad.
Ministers would begin consultations on planned counter-terrorism legislation within the next couple of weeks, with priority given to measures to combat the incitement and instigation of terrorism, he said.
Prior to the bombings on three underground trains and a bus in London last Thursday that killed at least 52 people and injured 700 others -- the worst attack on British soil since World War II -- counter-terrorism proposals were denounced as a threat to civil liberties.
"We will look urgently at how we strengthen the procedures to exclude people from entering the UK who may incite hatred or act contrary to the public good, and at how we deport such people, if they come here, more easily," Blair said.
Blair also said his government would begin talks immediately with British Muslim leaders about combating the "poisonous and perverted misinterpretation of the religion of Islam" by mobilising moderate opinion.
He added his government was talking to Muslim and non-Muslim governments on how to mobilise the "moderate and true voice of Islam."
"I am confident that other European countries, the majority of whom face the same type of threat, will be supportive in this, I'm sure they will," Blair said.
"The exchange of data and the retention of data is one very, very important part of this," he said.
Blair also sought to ease concerns among Muslims in Britain that they were now the target of a backlash.
Since the bombings that killed at least 52 people last Thursday, several mosques in Britain have been attacked and a Pakistani man was killed in a suspected racial attack in the central English city of Nottingham.
"I would ask for the same measured and calm response from the country that has characterised it" since the bombers struck the British capital's transport system, Blair told parliament.
"This is a small group of extremists. Not one who can be ignored, but neither should it define Muslims in Britain who are overwhelmingly law-abiding, decent members of our society," he said during the weekly session of prime minister's questions.
He added that his government condemned any attack against Muslims "unreservedly."
Blair also said any attempts by the extreme right to use the aftermath of the attacks to stir up racism was "particularly revolting".
I'm not from England, but a curry-eater does not a Muslim make. There are many Indians, Pakistanis & others from those areas who are Hindu & other religions. Ravi Zacharis isn't Muslim.
I like a dose once in a while myself. Excuse my reference to curry...
How would the average Brit show displeasure ? Authorities have pretty much rounded up all the guns and knives.
This is an obvious first step that should have been done years ago, but wasn't because of political correctness.
Well, it's a start, anyhow.
We have the same problem in the U.S., albeit a bit smaller, in relation to our overall population.
You're missing the point.
I think Freeper Valin's hint
is that terrorists
are just a facade
and the powers behind them
are the real bad guys.
However, I'm not
clever enough to be sure
which brand of tin foil
is most popular
for sorting out who's in charge
behind what we see . . .
What we are fighting is a sect/branch/version(?) of Islam.
I say it, George Bush says it, Dick Cheney says it, Condi Rice says it, Don Rumsfeld says it, Natan Sharansky says it, Tony Blair says it, Dr. Benard Lewis says it, Daniel Pipes says it....
During World War 2,
some Germans liked the US.
Even the Nazis
had three or four "blocs"
and not all of them were nuts.
Yet the free world fought
Germany at large.
We didn't task our soldiers
with sorting out which
Germans were Nazis
and, of that set, which were bad
Nazis worth killing.
Apples & oranges.
Quran 8:7 Allah wished to confirm the truth by His words: Wipe the infidels out to the last.
They may say it, but the truth is Islam is what it is. All secs branches etc follow the same koran except for a few different sura's and hadith. The overall teachings of the koran in regards to the Infidel, the christian, Jew, Hindu, Buddist, and world domination is the same.
History teaches us what Islam is all about as well. Are you going to deny history too?
So long Britian. You had a nice run while it lasted.
No. What I am going to do is stand with people a whole lot smarter than I on this.
IF what you say is true don't you think that we'd see A LOT more incidences of terrorism given that there are 1.3 Billion Musllims in the world?
Article Two:
The Islamic Resistance Movement is one of the wings of Moslem Brotherhood in Palestine. Moslem Brotherhood Movement is a universal organization which constitutes the largest Islamic movement in modern times. It is characterised by its deep understanding, accurate comprehension and its complete embrace of all Islamic concepts of all aspects of life, culture, creed, politics, economics, education, society, justice and judgement, the spreading of Islam, education, art, information, science of the occult and conversion to Islam.
Article Three:
The basic structure of the Islamic Resistance Movement consists of Moslems who have given their allegiance to Allah whom they truly worship, - "I have created the jinn and humans only for the purpose of worshipping" - who know their duty towards themselves, their families and country. In all that, they fear Allah and raise the banner of Jihad in the face of the oppressors, so that they would rid the land and the people of their uncleanliness, vileness and evils.
Article Four:
The Islamic Resistance Movement welcomes every Moslem who embraces its faith, ideology, follows its programme, keeps its secrets, and wants to belong to its ranks and carry out the duty. Allah will certainly reward such one.
Article Five:
Time extent of the Islamic Resistance Movement: By adopting Islam as its way of life, the Movement goes back to the time of the birth of the Islamic message, of the righteous ancestor, for Allah is its target, the Prophet is its example and the Koran is its constitution. Its extent in place is anywhere that there are Moslems who embrace Islam as their way of life everywhere in the globe. This being so, it extends to the depth of the earth and reaches out to the heaven.
Article Six:
The Islamic Resistance Movement is a distinguished Palestinian movement, whose allegiance is to Allah, and whose way of life is Islam. It strives to raise the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine, for under the wing of Islam followers of all religions can coexist in security and safety where their lives, possessions and rights are concerned. In the absence of Islam, strife will be rife, oppression spreads, evil prevails and schisms and wars will break out.
Article Seven:
As a result of the fact that those Moslems who adhere to the ways of the Islamic Resistance Movement spread all over the world, rally support for it and its stands, strive towards enhancing its struggle, the Movement is a universal one. It is well-equipped for that because of the clarity of its ideology, the nobility of its aim and the loftiness of its objectives.
On this basis, the Movement should be viewed and evaluated, and its role be recognised. He who denies its right, evades supporting it and turns a blind eye to facts, whether intentionally or unintentionally, would awaken to see that events have overtaken him and with no logic to justify his attitude. One should certainly learn from past examples.
Your looking at much more than just a "sec". Unless you are blind, unaware, There is murder, genocide all over the world from the hand of Islam. It spreads by the sword, always has. http://www.mideastweb.org/hamas.htm Read it all. It's a global concept.
What, killing over a million people in the last ten years isn't enough for you?
10,000 Christians in Sudan alone last month? just because the media doesn't report it, doesn't mean it's not happening EVERY SINGLE DAY. Everywhere!!
There is a reason
why politicians would want
to define this war
using pointless terms
like "sect" to describe Muslims.
If politicians
present themselves as
facing an impossible
task -- sorting out which
sects we're fighting and
how much support other sects
are giving bad guys --
then nobody can
ever say politicians
have failed! Because they
have couched the issue
as impossible, so if
they just do something,
then us citizens
will have to be satisfied.
If we're not blown up . . .
Blair knows who the radical clerics and their followers are in Britain and Bush knows who they are in the US. What needs to be done is to start picking them up and if there is any protest, get them, too. Then deport them. Oh the UN will protest, but who cares? This is a war on terrorism, and you don't allow the enemy to move around freely in your country in a war. While this is all going on you need to put the military alongside the border patrol on the borders, and then tighten the immigration rules. Blair and Bush can do this cause they are both lame ducks. It is time to do what is best for their countries.
