It's Venus vs. Mars for Singles at Weddings (This summer, hide your bridesmaids.)

NEW YORK — This summer, hide your bridesmaids.

So warns the promo for this weekend's new movie, "Wedding Crashers", which is about a couple of bachelors who show up at weddings uninvited to prey on lonely bridesmaids and especially desperate female guests.

The movie cashes in on two common stereotypes about weddings: that women hate attending nuptials alone, and that men, realizing how vulnerable weddings make single women feel, use the occasions to their advantage.

But how are true are these generalizations?

That's a scale far beyond my experience.

Beyond your experience, for now. Just wait til your kids start getting married. The thing is kids from big Catholic families tend to marry ...kids from big Catholic families.

The last time one of our kids got married, they had a little more than 200 people at the wedding. And really, well over half was family.

Sorry for your loss. You know though what they say about it's better to have loved and lost the love than not having loved at all. At least you have your good memories. After all, that's what life's all about: building good memories and making a difference...

People aren't allowed to dring a date???? What kind of control freak behavior is that????

Control freak is a definite possibility. But, really, my first thought was cheapskate. Truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

I'm going to guess with Vince Vaughan and Owen Wilson in the leads it should do pretty well. Vaughan is starting to become well known for being in comedys that teens and college aged kids like. Old School being the primary one. The previews make it look funny to me and my friends who are in the demographic they are shooting for.

I had a friend who was not the most wealthy person and they wanted to have a big wedding. They didn't pull anything like telling people not to bring dates. They had gumbo, crawfish, red beans and rice, chicory coffee, ice cream and cold beer. It was probably one of the best weddings I have ever been to. Awesome.

All of it was homemade (except the beer and ice cream)

It was real and real fun!

And NOBODY was denied a date!!

It may not have been stuffy enough for some here but . . . . .

"Who said that? "Done" 5 or 6? What does that mean, or don't I want to know?"

I have done 5 or 6 weddings since my wife died. I am a Justice of the Peace which was the premise of my comments.

Folks, Please! I'm not so rude as to brag about numbers ;-)

So true. Some of the best weddings I've ever been to have been in VFW type halls with serve yourself keg beer, and make your own hot roast beef or meatball hoagies right from Crock pots. And really, throw in a little music and potato salad and what more do you need for a great party?

But then, we don't check with Miss Manners before we throw a party in our family. We might improperly be including people who have no business celebrating with us.

I didn't say anything about almost everything you wrote me. LOL

And I'm happy to hear that you have such a great marriage.

Weddings are the celebration of two people getting married. It has less than NOTHING whatsoever to do with whether or not YOU are married, want to get married, date, or anything other than helping the bride and groom celebrate their union.

But, since you hate going to weddings and don't care enough about the people who invite you to them, to go and share in their happiness, by all means, don't go.

No, the rules aren't regional at all. As a matter if fact, they are universal. Whether or not people adhere to them or not, is , of course, their choice.

And FYI...unless I am very much mistaken, you are getting weddinginvitations; not wedding announcements and yes, there IS a difference.

No, they were caught by wedding planners, members of the family, and/or the directors/staff of the place the receptions were held in. Which is what would happen, outside of the stupid movie.

Then the bride and groom weren't doing their job, by seating you with "stuck-in-the-muds". Or, maybe that's the only kind of people they knew.

You can, if you want to, say that people can bring a guest. Usually, though, "guests" are for those in serious relationships. But the uninvited are a BIG no no.

No, I didn't; neither at mine, nor the one I gave for my daughter.

NEVER ASSUME. :-)

Buffet or sit-down is, of course your choice; however, it's a matter of pocketbook and taste. What you find BORING, others may not and vice-a-versa. :-)
