About the Mac OS X 10.4.2 Update (Delta)

This software updates Mac OS X 10.4.1 to version 10.4.2.

Important: Please read before installing

  • You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
  • The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.
  • If issues occur during installation--for example, Software Update quits unexpectedly--please see this document.

Installation

You have two ways to update to Mac OS X 10.4.2: Use Software Update or the standalone installer. You only need to use one of these methods to update your computer.

Automatic Software Update

Software Update, located in System Preferences, can automatically download and install the latest Apple software. Software Update may have linked you to this document for additional information about the update.

The update's size may vary from computer to computer when installed using Software Update.

Because some updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to run Software Update more than once to get all available updates.

Standalone installer

Two versions of the installer (Delta and Combo, described below) are available from Apple Downloads as standalone updates. After you download an update, you can use it to update your computer without being connected to the Internet.

The standalone installer, particularly the Combo Update, is useful if you have multiple computers to update and only want to download the update once.

Improvements

This update offers many reliability and compatibility improvements. Here are just a few of the enhancements and improvements included:

AirPort

Mail

iChat

Finder

Other applications

iDisk, WebDAV

Networking

Other enhancements

While I'm at it, do other FR Mac users have iSight cameras and use iChat AV? I'm looking to use my camera more, but I have nobody that is regularly online to test it out with!

If you have an interest in this, please FReepmail me and we can exchange IM IDs....

I use it with my family when I'm traveling, it works pretty well and the kids love it. It's pretty much useless for business communications, you have to look at the camera while talking, people are generally uncomfortable doing that (they'd rather check e-mail)

I use iSight occasionally. I have a colleague who really loves it, and sets up teleconferences with multiple people across the country. You need to have a G5 to host a multiway video chat, but I'm still limited to my G4 Powerbook

I initially bought the iSight for use as a camera to display a cell phone screen on a video projector, to demonstrate cell phone software for medical applications. It didn't work very well for this, however. The first problem was that the pictured is mirrored. This makes things more comfortable when you're looking at yourself on the screen, but isn't so useful for capturing images for projection.

The real killer app for iSight, in the medical domain, is telemedicine. With an iBook and an iSight camera at either end, you can deliver health advice to the ends of the earth.

Thanks for the ping. I'll get the Combo Update tomorrow at work - I'm stuck on dial-up at home, and the file is 58 MB.

iSight users might be interested in the $8 shareware called iGlasses. It allows you to adjust the quality of the iSight picture. You can control brightness, sharpness, etc, or make your picture black&white or sepia-toned.

Whee
I'll wait for 10.5 to reach market, oh yeah, and for the Intel-based Macs (probably a laptop).
