Thanks for your thoughtful post.
Please do continue to offer your essays, as brainstorming the what-ifs is integral to TM.
The London bombings were timed to upstage the G-8 summit, which IMO, was effective.
Also, IMO....that the bombing originated at "King's Crossing" named after King George (IV? I think) was
no subtle coincidence.
Qaeda knows if they use WMD, we will too....and there's no doubt in my mind that we would. Subsequently, they know that our WMD's are bigger than theirs.
Italy, the Netherlands and Australia are on alert and probably next on the list.
Italy, probably before their election primary in October.
They will try to hit us again...
So groceries and other supplies are a good idea.

I think you're right, that it was a terrible accident.
London Bombing Suspect May Have Studied At N.C. State
RALEIGH, N.C. -- An Egyptian-born academic being sought by London police as part of their investigation into last week's terrorist bombings spent a semester at North Carolina State University, school officials said Thursday.
The Times of London, quoting unidentified police sources, said detectives were interested in locating Magdy el-Nashar, 33, who recently taught chemistry at Leeds University in northern England. (snip)

I'll throw in the other $0.98: I agree 100%

King's Cross
not 'Crossing'
I respectfully disagree. The bombings were timed with the G-8 summit because the security apparatus would be greatly concentrated on the other end of the island while they made their last movements around town in the week or so before the bombings. Al Qaeda doesn't give a crap about the G-8 as a body, so I don't think this was a political statement. They want to terrorize private citizens and this was the window of opportunity to act when the least possibility of drawing the heat existed.

Actually, I agree with you on that.
But, I also think they thoroughly enjoyed knowing that the G8 leaders were on British soil at the time.
I still don't understand why everyone is ignoring the Olympic decision just 12-18 hours prior.
In past years, the Republic of Korea has been the victim of several terrorist incidents instigated by North Korea The November 1987 destruction of the South Korean airliner by d confessed North Korean agent in which 115 people were killed has heightened the concern of the South Korean Government about terrorism. especially in view of the coming 1988 Summer Olympics.
Bilateral consultatioris on counterterrorism t.eld in Washington in September bebeen the South Korean Government and the United States reinforced the arrangements for information sharing training. and military preparedness The United States has publicly staled its support lor a safe and Secure Olympics The South Korean Government has also establtihed a joinl btmonthly committee wilh Japan 10 coordinate antiterrorism cooperation relaled to the Olympics.
Following the downing of the Korean airliner. South Korea stimulated a debate on North Korean terrorism in the UN Security Council and successfully moved a con2emnatory reso1ut:on in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in early 1988.

July 15, 2005 - LONDON (JTA) -- As if mocking the scenes of jubilation at London's successful 2012 Olympics bid, the terrorist explosions that came the next day left devastation in their wake. In all our synagogues, British Jews are joining our prayers with those of others, grieving for the dead, praying for the injured, and sharing our tears with those of the bereaved. Terror has become the scourge of our age, and it will take all our inner strength to cope with it.

and what is scary about this - so did Khallid Sheik Mohammed, he also went to college someplace in north carolina.
Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was also educated in NC.
How did they know London would win? They were planning this for months. The G-8 summit was known about long ago.
Not surprising - in the least - that another terrorist was educated in an American school.
Post 9/11, the Muslim Student Association at the University of Connecticut started to become more vocal about the rights of Muslims, etc. I could swear there were a couple of bad apples in that group. One tried to help tutor us in Arabic, and started going off about how terrible the U.S. treats Muslims around the world, and that we should understand that we should face payback for our actions. He was an interesting person, wore an Islmic skullcap, etc. I always wondered about him...
Oh, you know it.
Well, I'm not sure when the IOC decision date was first announced, but I had personally heard about it at least month prior to the decision, and I would imagine the date was set in stone even prior to that.
Assuming al Qaida is well established throughout Europe, and I think we have good evidence that it is, there is no reason to believe they could not have had cells ready to go in Paris as well as London (the two top contenders). Perhaps each cell had orders to attack if their city won.
The Olympics is very symbolic, and terrorists love symbolism. The very fact that a city gets the Olympics means that it will likely go down in history as a city of great things. Cities are also chosen that have good public transport, to shuttle all the Olympic goers from venue to venue. These people assume they are safe, until an attack on that very system occurs.
Not ignoring it, I just don't know what would have happened if say...France would have been given the Olympic decision.
Would London still have been attacked? France?
We sure can't rule out that it was somehow related.
