The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix - Daily Terrorism Threat
Threat Matrix: U.S. Terrorism
Terrorists could be just getting started
Full Story

New York City and Washington. Bali, Indonesia; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Istanbul, Turkey; Madrid, Spain. And now London.

When will it end? Where will it all lead?

The experts aren't encouraged. One terrorism researcher sees the prospect of "endless" war. Adds the man who tracked Osama bin Laden for the CIA, "I don't think it's even started yet."

They used to be open to guests, I guess they stopped that recently. I'm guessing the thread might have something to do with weather, because it hit my site log about 400 times. Probably nothing important, just curious. ;)

I'm surprised Italy hasn't been hit yet, given it geography. Italy has much longer borders to control than, say, France, Spain, Germany or even Great Britain.

Most Muslims come from the Ionic Sea into Calabria, and from North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Lybia) into Sicily.

Venezuela is a terrorist sponsoring nation, and Chavez has just recently announced that an attack on Cuba is an attack on Venezeula, and an attack on Venezuela is an attack on Cuba. Their hopes and visions "are one." Citizenship is being handed out like candy to welcomed terrorists. It is a very different country for any of you who might have known this place 10+ years or more ago. Last summer/fall during an extended stay at a slick Caracas hotel (elections, security issues), I stumbled upon middle eastern men several different nights using the hotel's internet system as a "hot spot" in the stairwell. I engaged in conversation with one of the "vacationers." Aside from allowing him to air his extreme political views, he shared that he was on his way to Uruguay and Argentina for touring. (Muslim trinagle?)
I periodically check FR to see if there is news about Chavez/Caracas, but sadly, attention to this growing crisis seems to slip through the radar all too often.

Hi there GorillaMa, nice to see you back. Hope all is well with you.

TM'ers, correct me if I'm wrong, but I have the impression that the general consensus on Daleel is that he is mostly bluster.

Cave of Darkness=American Hiroshima does make sense though.

Here is a link to an interesting site, with "dalel" in the domain name. I don't know if that is a name (as in daleel) or if it is a arabic word.

Hi there! I am doing well. My m-i-l passed away last fall in Caracas. Husband is there now. How are you? What happened to Piper? I heard that the "El" on the Wilmette/Howard line was shut down today due to 3 alleged bombs placed there. Can't find any news on it though. Any Chicagoans able to confirm this?

"Then again, my girlfriend calls me pompous when I talk politics... so, I suppose I might be."

If she can't tell the difference between being pompous and being educated you better get her reading the TM threads so she can catch up with your thoughts. Like many today she might be programmed to respond to conservative opinions with accusations of pomposity (courtesy of the NEA.)

I think the terrorists would consider an attack on WYD 2005 an attack on Italy in the same way an attack on a US embassy would be an attack on the USA.

The suicide bomb squad from Leeds

By Michael Evans, Daniel McGrory and Stewart Tendler

FOUR friends from northern England have changed the face of terrorism by carrying out the suicide bombings that brought carnage to London last week.

It emerged last night that, for the first time in Western Europe, suicide bombers have been recruited for attacks. Security forces are coming to terms with the realisation that young Britons are prepared to die for their militant cause.

Three of the men lived in Leeds and the immediate fear is that members of a terrorist cell linked to the city are planning further strikes. The mastermind behind the attacks and the bombmaker are both still thought to be at large.

The man who planted the bomb at Edgware Road was named last night as Mohammed Sidique Khan, 30, the married father of an eight-month-old baby, who is believed to have come from the Leeds area.

Two other terrorists were Hasib Hussain, 19, who bombed the bus in Tavistock Square, of Colenso Mount, Leeds, and Shehzad Tanweer, 22, the Aldgate bomber, who lived at Colwyn Road, Leeds.

Police are still trying to identify the fourth, whose remains are believed to be in the bombed Tube train carriage on the Piccadilly Line. It is thought that he comes from Luton.

Armed police raided six addresses in West Yorkshire yesterday, including the homes of three of the men, who they now know travelled to Luton in a hired car last Wednesday to join the fourth man. They boarded the 7.40 Thameslink train to King’s Cross the next day, each armed with a 10lb rucksack bomb.

Police found a bomb factory in Leeds containing a “viable amount of explosives”. Explosives were also recovered from a car left parked near Luton station. The raids came after the discovery of driving licences and credit cards at the scenes of the explosions, and a telephone call from the mother of Hasib Hussain, who asked police to try to trace her son.

A relative of one of the bombers was arrested and taken to London for questioning. Intelligence agencies say that at least two of the men had recently returned from Pakistan. All four were British, but with origins in Pakistan. MI6, MI5 and British diplomats were in touch with the Pakistani authorities last night to try to track down any connections with terrorists there. Security sources confirmed that none of the bombers was on any MI5 file, although one had links to a person investigated by police.

The four were captured on CCTV cameras at King’s Cross Thameslink station, laughing together and carrying rucksacks, minutes before they set off for their targets at 8.30am on July 7.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info and links.

A couple of thoughts...
They could have just been out for a boat ride, or, they were taking photos.
Even though there were no photos of the bridge on the cell phone they could have dropped the real camera into the water to dispose of the suspicious evidence. Or, the brother that went back to his car and later turned himself in to the police could have stashed the camera somewhere for later retrieval. If he was smart he wouldn't have stashed in in his car. Hopefully, if there was a camera, he isn't that bright.
