Doctor Files Lawsuit Against Don Imus

NEW YORK -- A doctor who once cared for sick children at Don Imus' New Mexico ranch has sued the tart-tongued radio personality for slander, claiming he made false derogatory comments about him on his "Imus in the Morning" show.

Dr. Howard Allen Pearson says in court papers that on at least four days last year, Imus said Pearson "was one of the worst doctors in the world and did not care if children suffered."

Pearson's lawsuit says Imus apparently misunderstood the physician's response to a morning call to treat a child for pain in July 2004.

Pearson left the main house and began a quarter-mile walk to the infirmary. Because the nurse had said there was no emergency, Pearson declined a ride offered by Imus' wife, court papers say.

The doctor says he gave the child pain medicine, and she resumed normal activities. About 45 minutes later, Imus, armed with a gun and a knife, pulled up in his truck, jumped out and began yelling and cursing at Pearson, the papers say.

Understood now, but the article comes across like Imus was ARMED and dangerous packing a gun and a knife, I'm not the only one that took it that way!

Those who deserve one another are often fatally attracted.

Why not take a ride if a child is in pain? Just because it is not an emergency, why should the kid suffer any longer than necessary?

The doc's nonchalance looks bad at first glance, but probably doesn't warrant being called the worst doctor in the world, etc. Nor do we know the whole story; maybe the doc had good reason not to ride with the Missus?

I didn't like watching what he did to her. I found it despicable. I don't care if you liked it, though it says something about you if you did. By not liking it, I am not making any statement in support of any lawsuit. End of point.

Good work? Really? How is the investigation into his little ranch going? Don't bother answering I'm not really that interested. Imus is an obnoxious fool who should consider retiring to his ranch to continue his "good work."

I didn't get that impression from reading the article. I though I remembered reading somewhere (can't find it now) the the medical staff had separate quarters and didn't stay in the main ranch house. I assumed that she offered to get him and take him to the girl.

My point still stands, though. There should be vehicles ready and waiting for the medical staff. Why does the wife have to get involved. It's not like he can't afford it. Shoot, he can just auction a couple off and have the listeners pay for it - like he did everything else.

Maybe he felt as if he was snookered? The story lacks a lot in details, including if the Doctor was being paid for services or donating them. The Doctor was going on the word of the Nurse that the case was non-emergent. The story does sound as if the child was in pain long before the doctor was notified. If the child was at home and taken to an ER she would have had to wait much longer than the time it took for a walk. Youngsters can handle pain much worse if they are exposed to folks who are freaking out which is what it sounds like Imus was doing.

Perhaps I should blame Newsday then for making it sound more menacing than it really was? :-)

I get the impression that she was at a distinct disadvantage even before the diet. :-)

All good points... to me though whatever happened before the doc was summoned has nothing to do with how the doc reacted to the summons. If he is paid to jump..then doesn't then who's fault is it?

The story says he declined a ride and left walking from the ranch house. You can imply she was somewhere else, but that's not indicated in the facts.

Imus, a former druggy by his own admission, gives the impression that he is always on something.

The Dr. should have taken the ride.

Two people walk to a car, get in, Fasten seat belts, drive about 3 blocks, park, unfasten seat belts, get out, walk the rest of the way. OR walk directly about 3 blocks, without delay. Which is faster? It probably works out about the same. There is certainly not enough difference to justify coming after someone with a knife and a gun.

On the other hand a lawsuit over something so trivial could have been avoided by just getting into the vehicle as his employer requested.

Imus reminds me as a granny with an oversized cowboy hat. and he's a suck up to all those liberal hacks both in the U.S. Senate and the mainstream media. For example, Imus takes his leads from losers like Howard Fineman.
