Sen. "The response that I heard was that she said she was flattered, that she didn't say no," Specter, who was not among that group, said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation." "I think it would be quite a capping to her career if she served for a time, maybe a year or so."

They would prefer Bush to pick from a list of conservative federal appeals court judges: Samuel Alito, J. Michael Luttig, Michael McConnell, John Roberts Jr. and J. Harvie Wilkinson III.Note how the AP (or perhaps DNC writers) only listed white males. Yet conservative groups have named Janice Rogers Brown, Edith Jones, Emilio Garza, Manuel Estrada, Edith Clements, and Priscilla Owens just as often as the ones they listed.

It's misleading to say that only conservative groups are complaining about Gonzalez. It's more accurate to say that Gonzales is not an origionalist and is opposed by a whole host of folks from Conservatives to Libertarians.

That's debateable, to say the least.

I have a DREADFUL feeling that Bush is going to go with Gonzalez, as he continues in his odd (odd at this point, since there is no reason to capture any minority vote for him) courting of Hispanics.
Just a feeling in the pit of my stomach. Nothing more.

When is PA going to vote out this RINO?Through some quirk of Scottish law, he gets to stay.
To: FourtySeven
I am cautiously pessimistic, but I hope Bush doesn't nominate Gonzales. If he does, I will have to concede that his entire presidency and his election promises have been a fraud on the conservative voters.
Bush should nominate a solid and brilliant conservative ala Michale Luttig.

"Still, Specter said he thinks Rehnquist will stay on. 'My own analysis is that the chief is not going to step down as long as his health holds up,' he said."
This moron practically had announced Mr. Rehnquist's retirement last fall.

From the article:
"Multiple confirmation hearings could change the nomination equation for Bush, Specter said. "It would give the president a chance to put somebody whom the conservatives would really like very much to fill where Rehnquist has been philosophically on the court, and somebody who is more of a swing voter, like Justice O'Connor," he said. Obviously one or the other of such candidates would be voting other than Bush would vote. What kind of moron would purposely appoint two people to such a body knowing that they would vote differently on matters of vital importance to the nation? This must be some kind of liberal fantasy involving affirmative action with respect to dissenting votes on the Supreme Court.

Senators sitting around the coffee table discussing various scenarios makes a news story?

Arlen Sphincter:
"It would give the president a chance to put somebody whom the conservatives would really like very much to fill where Rehnquist has been philosophically on the court, and somebody who is more of a swing voter, like Justice O'Connor," he [Sphincter] said. Sphincter votes like a RAT and even thinks like a RAT. Appoint "a swing voter".
Arlen, you are a TOTAL IDIOT.
Bush should appoint two Robert Borks! I sure wish you would retire, Sphincter, you worthless RAT in makeup.

It's important to understand that if Bush nominates Gonzalez, it's not because he wishes to court the hispanic vote. Nominating Emilio Garza or Manuel Estrada would accomplish the same thing. Bush nominating Gonzales is about Bush's lack of commitment to the social conservative agenda - nothing less, nothing more.
