uly 11, 2005 -- The NYPD has disconnected cellphone service in all the city's vehicular tunnels since the London terror blasts to prevent anyone from detonating a bomb, authorities said yesterday.
Service will remain off until further notice, spokesmen for the Port Authority and Metropolitan Transportation Authority said.
PA spokesman Tony Ciavolella said the cutoff came "at the request of the NYPD." The PA operates the Lincoln and Holland tunnels.
MTA spokesman Brian Dolan said a similar policy was enacted Thursday in the Brooklyn-Battery and Midtown tunnels.
A police source said disabling cellphones in the tunnels is a good security measure, but not a foolproof one.

Not a secret, just not publicizing it. Why give the terrorists so much advance warning.

You forgot to turn off the sarcasm.
Does that mean the rest of the thread is now sarcasm?
I guess I'll turn it off. /sarcasm

A nearly equally effective trick would be to intermittently interrupt service. That would introduce sufficient uncertainty into the terrorist's plans that they could never count on being able to set off a bomb to any predictable schedule, while allowing most people to use their phones most of the time.
Now they can count on everyone being unable to report any suspicious activities.
Not the kind of certainty we want them to have...

Yeah. Damned if you do...
Just another thought, isn't there some way they could block incoming calls, yet still allow people to call out in case of an emergency?

This is a red herring anyway since such a spotting is not going to occur.Agreed. Terrorists never make dumb mistakes.

Do you happen to know why every Persian rug has a deliberate flaw?

Probably because of some dumbass Islamic fear of challenging Allah's perfection.
To: justshutupandtakeit
Bingo
"Expect slight inconsistencies and at least one imperfection in a hand-woven rug originating from a country in the Middle East. The philosophy, from an Islamic point of view, is that only God is perfect, and, therefore, nothing man makes should be perfect. A flaw will be carefully woven into each rug." No such thing as a perfect terrorist, either...

But there are effective ones.
To: justshutupandtakeit
Indeed! THat's why we need every advantage and every opportunity to catch them. It doesn't help to gouge out our own eyes.

We are not living in the days of Ben Franklin.
So, presume you would prefer that they leave the cell phones alone - even though it may mean you and all your co-riders of the transit system are blown to bits with one little phone call.
What freedom do you have then. And, did you get a vote of how the others on the vehicle might feel?

If we have, we have.
We also have not had another attack for 3+ years.
