Isn't it something how the weather is crystal clear before and after these storms...Emily needs to stay away.

Yesterday we were traveling from northern VA to southern NC and passed a lot of tree removal trucks headed south ... some from as far away as Pennsylvania. Also passed a mobile emergency center bus.

Thought y'all might find it reassuring to know that help was being mobilized even before Dennis made landfall.

Here in Marshall County, AL (northeast part of state), we got tons of rain and some gusty winds. Some minor flooding but no big deal otherwise. Looks like lots more rain this week so we might not be out of woods yet. Creeks are rising fast around here.

Here in Northeast Mississippi we will have many officials waking up with egg on their faces because of the wimp this storm turned into.

All non-essential functions in the city of Columbus and at Columbus AFB were shut down for today. Predictions of 65 mph winds, 10 inches of rain and 500-1000 trees down will, thankfully, be something we can now joke about. I haven't seen any official numbers but it looks like we got less than 2 inches of rain. The wind wouldn't amount to a West Texas fart.

I'll never forget you niggling us on a hurricane thread several year ago. :-P

Otherwise, glad to hear your time in the South hasn't been too dangerous--yet.

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I truly feel for the officials that have to make the decisions about what to do with these storms...they're danged if they do and danged if they don't.

I'm sure having egg on their face is a sight more comfortable than if they had done little or nothing and Dennis turned into a lion instead of a lamb.

We were sitting out here in the California desert doing some "insurance" mulling....since Dennis maintained official hurricane status (versus tropical storm)for hours after it crossed the shore, I'll bet there are tons of ramifications in upper Alabama for those that had wind damage, etc.

I'm betting that a homeowner's policy does NOT cover for "hurricane" damage, but DOES cover once it's been downgraded.

Given this, I'd be biting my nails if I lived there and was expecting a claim.

THANK YOU for posting the info from your brother. We've been searching for info about Okaloosa Island.

Since Hwy 98 thru the island is the easiest way to Destin, there have to be major problems in that area for awhile to come.

Thank you for your work with the Dennis threads. Now you get to rest up a short while before Emily shows up.

Interesting thoughts--hni about policies out of the hurricane zone. Haven't owned a home anywhere else. Let me know what you find out.

We got almost nothing from Dennis here in Polk County - maybe an inch of rain, tops. Just a couple of gray, windy days.

It looks like Emily is going to bring quite a lot more than that to this part of Florida early next week. I'd like to think that would be all I'd get this season, but after having three storms pass within 20 miles of my house last year, I'm not betting on that.

Much deserved respite after last season.

Emily needs to hang a right and go bother Greenland.

" Wasn't that the big coincidence--FR crashed just before Dennis was making landfall. "

I wondered what happened. Sorry for Florida's repeat hurricane mess but we sure appreciate the rain we'll get from it in neighboring drought stricken states.

Can't tell I grew up playing in 65 mph sand storms in West Texas can you?

"I'm sure having egg on their face is a sight more comfortable than if they had done little or nothing and Dennis turned into a lion instead of a lamb."

You are so right about that. And the great thing about it is the head honcho at the base and our young (younger than me) Republican mayor will both come out and say exactly that with their sheepish 'awe-shucks' grins.

Mayor Rupp is a former news director at the local TV station and has a great public persona. He's in his young 40s and a political mover. He will no doubt be climbing the ladder to bigger and better things here in the state and possibly Washington. I hope he remembers where he came from and keeps his down-home attitude as he moves up the ranks.

Sounds like they have it all under control. The Mayor's time in TV news will help in the long run of his political career - he knows all the tricks of the trade, so to speak :)
