Chinese rigs, crews arriving in western Colorado

Some Chinese drill crew members already have arrived in western Colorado, preparing to start drilling for natural gas in the Piceance Basin.

An official with Denver-based Western Energy Advisors, which brokers arrangements for the Chinese crews and exploration and production companies, said he was unfamiliar with specific crews’ schedules, but that some crews and rigs could be expected to arrive in western Colorado now.

Several western Colorado residents on Wednesday reported seeing drill rigs arriving or being set up in the area.

Western Energy Advisors worked with federal agencies to arrange for visas for the Chinese crews, said Bill Croyle, a partner in Western Energy.

One hurdle the company had to clear was to show that the jobs couldn’t be done by American citizens or legal residents.

That wasn’t difficult to show, Croyle said, citing the loss of “a million” domestic jobs among major oil companies over recent years, as well as reductions among smaller employers.

Much of the domestic exploration and production industry is “just gone,” he said. Rigs have been trucked in from Canada and elsewhere for drilling in the United States.

“In China, drilling is a lifetime profession,” he said.

“These people know what they’re doing,” Croyle said. “It’s all about the crews.”

Meanwhile we can't seem to see past the next quarterly earnings report.

Much of equipment they use is copies of patented drilling equipment. Someone needs to examine their equipment and file some complaints. If they imported fake trademark equipment..it could be seized.

Are our EPA and environazis going to give the Chicoms drilling operations the same anal exams that drove our companies out of business? I'll bet not. The Sierra Club et al should never have acquired the power to shut down industries that are now being taken over by the Chinese.

If the American companies went bust, then the equipment may actually been sold to the Chinese and then used in this case. They do it in the steel industry.

I was in nearby San Bernadino in 1983 when a steel-mill in Compton, CA was sold to the Chinese, dismantled and shipped out.

Colorado Welcomes Chinese/American Joint Venture
Golden Bear Drilling & Services Corporation

In response to the equipment and service shortage in Colorado's oil and gas exploration industry, a new company, Golden Bear Drilling & Services Corporation, was created through a joint venture between Jilin Petrolum and investors in Colorado, Oklahoma, New York and Washington DC. The collaborative effort will provide drilling and completion services to oil and gas companies in the Rocky Mountain region.

Golden Bear, headquartered in Denver, will ship drilling rigs to Colorado that are in high demand by oil and gas companies and will provide assistance and operation training to local drill rig crews. Golden Bear will begin its first project this February in Washington County, drilling gas wells for an American company. An equipment yard will also be located in Fort Morgan, Colorado, to service the Rocky Mountain region. The International Trade Division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade worked with Jilin Petroleum and others involved in the joint venture as it was finalizing its decision.

Jilin Petroleum Group is a $1 billion subsidiary of the China National Petroleum Company.
