WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top White House advisor Karl Rove was one of the secret sources that spoke to reporters about a covert CIA operative whose identity was leaked to the media, Newsweek magazine reported in its latest edition.
The magazine said Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin, confirmed that Rove talked to Time magazine about former ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife, CIA agent Valerie Plame.
Luskin said Rove recently gave Time magazine reporter Matt Cooper permission to testify about the conversation to a grand jury investigating the leak in 2003, according to Newsweek.
A U.S. federal judge ordered Cooper, along with New York Times reporter Judith Miller, to testify and reveal their confidential sources.
Last week Cooper avoided a jail sentence for contempt of court by agreeing to testify in the case. Miller refused to testify and was jailed.
The case has become an important test involving freedom of the press and has pitting the media's traditional use of anonymous sources against the efforts of a federal government prosecutor to investigate a possible crime.
It is illegal to knowingly reveal the identity of an undercover CIA agent.
Although Rove has made statements about the Plame leak, he has never publicly acknowledged talking to any reporter about the CIA agent.
Rove has carefully chosen his words when questioned about the leak. "I didn't know her name. I didn't leak her name," he told CNN last year when asked if he had had anything to do with it.

Newsweak trolling through the dumpster.
I heard that Rove has a machine that controls the weather.
Typical Boston Bulb - Rove never "leaked" her name - so give it up.

This is a joke, The Special Prosecutor would have made short work of this investigation if that was the case. The SP is investigating why would the CIA send a useless Diplomat like Joe Wilson to investigate a Document that was determined to be bogus long before Joe Wilson cited it as his reason for being sent to Niger.
Joe Wilson is calling the investigation a sham these days, the reason why he is, is because he knows who the SP is focusing on. LOL I'm warming up the Popcorn, this should be entertaining :-)
Besides, its my turn this week to use the machine.
Why didn't Rove admit this months ago and avoid all this crap?
He said it was the guy's wife. Even though he didn't mention her name he revealed her job.
If a dem did this, we'd be screaming and yelling.
Rove should resign.
PS: the reporter has more honor than Rove.
If Rove didn't mention the name then there's nothing for him to worry about, and you shouldn't waste your time on this either.
Fitzgerald (conducting the investigation) is known as a tenacious, thorough prosecutor. He refused to comment, and it is not clear whether he is pursuing evidence that will result in indictments, or just tying up loose ends in a messy case.
But the libmedia already has managed to get Rove tried, convicted, drawn and quartered.
Well you have great honor.
hahahahaha.
Rove did nothing wrong, even ABC News has admitted this tonight!
If you say someone's wife is a CIA employee, you are identifying that person. Do you not know the definition of is either?
Make no mistake. If Newweak had been protecting the name of a WH source during the Clinton years, then they would have gone to Devils Isle rather than reveal.
This is about the liberal media wanting to get Rove. Their method: say it was Rove and then try to blur what he actually said with what they want the public to believe, i.e., that he somehow broke the law. I've seen nothing yet that has Rove revealing an undercover CIA agent.

The best part is the fact that Valerie Plame WAS NOT an undercover agent at the time of this story. Plame was working at a desk job in the CIA's counter Proliferation Dept and was not undercover
