Maybe I'll just go spend the summer with my sister in Indianopolis.

and it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summer time."

That's OK! Here in Houston at least the stagnant high pressure dome has broken up and we're getting our afternoon rains now. It rained hard for at least an hour yesterday. thanks very much, we don't need a hurricane any more!

(but sometimes when it's been very hot and dry in the early part of the summer it almost seems to suck them in.)

Yes John we are getting some thunderstorms but so far it is spotty. My brother lives in Sugarland and unless it rained on him yesterday he had not had a drop. I am not praying for a hurricane, trust me. LOL

That's funny. There is an Emily in my apartment courtyard. We started talking and found out we are cousins. Sort of distant, but my Mom and her Dad grew up in the same small town about 900 miles from Houston with no connection to Houston. Her grandpa was my Aunt's dentist for many many years. Her Grandma kept all the genealogical information and my Mom took us there once so she could look at it. Emily has it now but she won't let me see it. She keeps saying "yeah, it's packed away, I'll have to pull it out sometime." She's a lessbian.

Uh... a hurricane can't make landfall in central or north texas, but I guess I know what you mean. That's usually called the upper or mid Texas coast, just a friendly FYI.

Now, Central (Austin and Waco) and North (Dallas, Lubbock)Texas can certainly take a drubbin' after it's done with Corpus and Houston over to Beaumont and Lake Charles, La.

A few years ago, I became fond of a young woman named Emily.

I would therefore like to declare that this hurricane (if it does become one) will be the cutest storm of all time!

Yeah, my policy is never pray for a hurricane, you're liable to get far more than you bargained for.

The one that went into Texas is known as the Great Storm of 1901. It literally destroyed Galveston, killing over 5000 people. It submerged the island. It was the worst natural disaster in American history, maybe still is.

They rebuilt the island and, by dredging the bay and dumping the contents on the land, raised it by about 8 feet. They also built a seawall, so hopefully they will never face that kind of devastation again. But seeing that storm track sort of raises the hackles on the neck of any Texan who knows their history.

I am familiar with the Galveston hurricane. Have been to Galveston many times. The other 1901 storm on that map is the loopy one off the coast of NC.

Thanks. That makes me feel better.

I guess I'm not a total wuss, given that I waited until 6:30am Sunday to leave. The first bands were just beginning to blow as I crossed the Dolly Parton Bridge. I didn't drive out of the heavy weather until Cullman (noon-ish). Could have been a foolish decision...I realize now I was judging everything by "landfall", but I had no way of knowing what the outer bands were doing north of here. (I should have checked with YOU!)

Just talked to my electrician and he's sitting in long traffic lines on I-65 THIS afternoon!

There's a Dolly Parton bridge? Is it a suspension bridge?

You're pretty close!

That's not its official name, but take a look at this picture of the top of the spans to see why the nickname stuck:

No one around here even knows the bridge's real name.

You know you did the right thing by leaving. Next time the outcome could be different.

Don't worry. I have no regrets. My decision was based on the actual data coming out that morning. At that time, it really looked like another Camille.

As a matter of fact, those reports didn't change much right up to landfall Sun. afternoon. It was only AFTER Dennis fell apart on the beach that all the nattering nabobs started second guessing the "hype" surrounding this storm.

That's ridiculous. Dennis looked like a very intense, very dangerous storm. The "hype" was reasonable based on what we knew at the time.

Armchair spectators watching the last 15 seconds of the game haven't got a clue.
