This could be worse then andrew damage wise..

Yes, and one other reason is that there is much old damaged material that has yet to be cleaned up that can be thrown about. Also, some sand bars rolled over last year are gone.

INITIAL INTENSITY ..... 125KT .... G150KT
12HR ... 125KT .... G150KT
24HR ... INLAND

LANDFALL POINT VERY NEAR MOBILE BAY....

Looks like the landfall point is right around the 89 W Longitude on their forecast track.

Latest recon that was retrieved during the conference reported that the central pressure is now 932mb, however the NHC stated they will hold off on any further increase to winds until wind data comes in. That would probably be reflected on the next intermediate advisory.

I think it's time to start preparing to see damage from this thing that we have not seen from a storm in a very long time.

I'm afraid you are right. Usually there is a lot of media noise. This storm however seems to have another 10 to 12 hours to get stronger before smacking land. I pray for all the innocent people and animals.

The plan is to ride it out. They are in Foley, Alabama. About 15 or 20 miles from Pensacola, just a few miles from Orange Beach. Close enough for a mandatory evacuation.

Foley, Alabama is just a few miles off of the coast. Less than 10. Thanks for your concern.

Thanks, they have only been in their new home a couple of months. It was worrisome when they were in Va. Beach, but they always escaped with minor damage and they were about 10 miles off shore.

I was in NO for Betsy, that was a huge storm. And in 1947 there was one that I was in BR for,,neighbors lost roofs, trees, it was scary as far inland as we were. We had just moved into a new house and my father kept talking about how strong it was. I was only five but thought he was talking about that too much and that meant it was going to fall in.

I have been in several large hurricanes, the one I remember as a child is Hazel in Richmond, Va. But after we moved to Miami, hurricanes becames a rather common occurence. I learned respect early.

The rule of thumb is that a hurricane will lose 1/2 of its wind speed in 24 hours. In the 3 or 4 hours that it would take a hurricane to get from the gulf to BR, it would not lose too much steam at all. A Cat 4 with 130 mph winds may come into BR with 100 mph winds or so. Huricane force winds could last all the way to Shreveport. We got very very lucky on this one, but it is still very early in the season.

Wind speed decay over land
