BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Someone tried to set fire to a mosque early Saturday and the FBI was investigating it as a hate crime, officials said.
No one was inside the Islamic Center of Bloomington when the fire occured at about 2 a.m. and the damage was confined to the kitchen area, said Nathan Ainsle, president of the Islamic Center.
A burned Quran was found outside, he said.
Someone threw a rock through a window, then poured a flammable liquid into the building and ignited it, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations said.
The timing of the fire, so soon after Thursday's bombing in London that killed at least 49 people, was suspicious, said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the council. Hooper said his group had been receiving hate e-mail and phone calls since Thursday.
FBI Special Agent Wendy Osborne said agents and members of a Joint Terrorism Task Force were investigating it as a hate crime.
"The FBI takes hate crimes and acts of violence very seriously," she said.
The mosque had not received any threats, and Ainsle said its 200-plus members generally have a good relationship with the community, home of Indiana University's main campus.
Fake hate crime...
... and that's what the British said in 1776.
Lucky break!
Allah be praised!
Had it spread to the bomb rooms in the basement, damage would have been significant, indeed.
That's my guess. Southern Indiana good old boys know how to torch a building. This is a sympathy ply by the towel heads.
No offense to the residents meant...
Thats to bad.
Wouldn't be the first time, now would it.
'nuff said.

That koran is what triggered my bs detector, too. A burned koran doesn't have the same impact to us that it does to muslims. If there had been a trip to a pigpen involved it would be a different story.
Oh puhleeze! How about just a crime committed.
> ...sounds fake to me.
Where is the burnt Koran? If "Nathan Ainsle, president of the Islamic Center" can't produce it, by the time the FBI is done with him, he (or whoever) could be looking at several felony charges.
I agree with you. A non-Muslim American would have left a pig's head as a calling card, not a Koran
I, uh, don't know how to say this without offending our wonderful Indiana Freepers, but I can't think of anywhere in Indiana to make a statement besides, "Start your motors!" in Indianopolis.
LOL!! ;-)
Hmmm...What a very interesting idea.....eh? :)
I never even knew Bloomington had a mosque. Numerous Christian churches have been burned in Indiana and a guy and his stripper girl friend were convicted. Yet, these were not considered hate crimes - what double standard.
If they find some guy who did it is it wrong to take up a defense collection?
