VATICAN SACKS SIX PERVY N.Y. PRIESTS
Yahoo News ^ | July 9, 2005 | Jennifer Fermino

Posted on 07/09/2005 1:41:26 PM PDT by NYer

The Vatican has defrocked six priests from the Archdiocese of New York — including one who paid for sex with an underage boy and another who was convicted of sodomizing a drunken teen, officials said yesterday.

All the men lost their pensions and will not be allowed to perform priestly duties and were stripped of their collars by the Roman Catholic Church following allegations of sexual abuse.

A seventh priest, who was also accused of sexual abuse, Rev. Alfred Gallant, of Orange County, was allowed to retain his title of priest and keep his pension, but not allowed to perform sacraments.

One of the defrocked priests, Daniel Calabrese, 44, who once served at a Staten Island parish — pleaded guilty in 1993 to performing oral sex on a teenager in upstate Poughkeepsie.

He admitted to plying the youngster with vodka before abusing him in his church rectory.

Patrick Quigley, who served as a clergyman in Manhattan and Staten Island, pleaded guilty to soliciting adolescent boys for sex in Rockland County.

In addition, Francis Stinner, Ralph LaBelle, Kenneth Jesselli and David Carson were all "reduced to a lay state."

According to an announcement in Catholic New York, the men were punished under the "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People."

The provision was created in 2002 after a string of high-profile molestation cases rocked the church's hierarchy and faithful.

In it, the church promised to report abuse to the police and forbids dioceses to sign confidentiality

agreements with victims.

The provision allows older or sick priests to keep their pension and title but not work in the church any longer.

The release of the men's identities fulfills a promise Edward Cardinal Egan made in 2002 after he turned over a list of 30 New York-area priests who'd been accused of sex offenses to the Vatican.

A Vatican committee determined whether the priests should be defrocked.

He'd said then that he would publicly name those who were expelled from the priesthood.

"This is part of what the cardinal pledged to do throughout this process," said archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling.

Zwilling said he will release more names "when and if we hear from the Vatican" about more expunged priests.

Mike Cullen, a former altar boy who was abused by his parish priest and now heads a clergy abuse activist group, said the archdiocese moved too slowly.

"That's not going to help the people that they've already damaged," said Cullen, who is part of the Survivor Network of those Accused by Priests. "It's beyond too little too late."

And you also sat next to a US Congressman who lied to you about hiring Joe Clark while this congressman was mayor. I wonder if the late Paterson Mayor/State Sen. Frank Graves' children know about this. When this congressman was mayor in 1990, Clark had already retired in 1989, LOL. Tell me, did he look you straight in the eye when he told you this?

Joe became principal way back in 1983 and retired in 1989 after 25 yrs. with the Paterson Bd. of Ed.

Published on March 14, 1989, Press of Atlantic City, The (NJ) NEWS BRIEFS 400 students walk out, back Clark PATERSON - About 400 Eastside High School students walked out of their building Monday and marched downtown to the Board of Education office in an apparent show of support for suspended school principal Joe Clark. The students left the school building around 9:30 a.m. and eventually took control of a meeting room in the Board of Education building, said Paterson Mayor Frank Graves. The students were escorted back to school by police about and hour later.

Why would they single out New Jersey?

A Fruedian slip? The first line in the article: "The Vatican has defrocked six priests from the Archdiocese of New York "

Think the story will be covered by any major broadcast media?

It was mentioned repeatedly all day yesterday on 1010WINS radio in the NY metro area.

..New Jersey .. New York ..

Hah! California boy here; I don't know enough about NY and NJ to make a mistake with hidden meanings. This was just your common, or garden variety carelessness. Thanks for the ping to it.

1) I am a Born Again Christian who loves (agape) kids...

2) ...and dislikes pederasts and those who sexually exploit children...

3) ...and whom, although not Catholic, has no problem with Catholics, and in no way disputes their interest in having a Pope lead them.

Exactly which of the above of my personal views struck you as being so offensive to you personally that you had to strike out and belittle my intelligence?

Please remove the mote from your eye and the chip from your shoulder before you come to me to make peace between us, brother. God be with you.

The number of priests guilty of such acts is insignificant compared to the number of teachers guilty of similar or worse acts. Across the country, roughly 2 teachers per day are caught in inappropriate situations with children.. yet the media only focuses on a few priests.

funny how that is...

Great News.

BTW, have you heard anything on the parish in NJ that allowed a politicians who supported abortion to speak at their church.

I can't remember all the details, but I remember that the priest was forced to leave while the politician was speaking.
