TWO? REALLY? [K. J. Lopez] All I'll say is I've talked to more people this morning who are prepping for the possibility than I thought would ever be taking it seriously. Posted at 09:00 AM
FOR PETE'S SAKE [K. J. Lopez] In the last half hour the new rumor that is keeping political geeks awake: Rehnquist and Stevens resign tomorrow. (Up until a little ago, the buzz was Renquist, as I noted in Bench Memos.) Posted at 10KùOÅ5 PM (yesterday)
I agree. As I've mentioned on a couple of other threads, all of the intense speculation on Gonzales may be a Rovian strategy designed to keep the tiny minds of the MSM and other nitwits and twits occupied until the president announces his real choice(s) which is/are going to drive the liberals absolutely beserk. I don't believe that Bush is going to miss this chance for a long-lasting legacy just for a chance to reward a friend. Gonzales may even be in on the plot.
I think we've established that he got O'Conner right when most others were concentrating on Rehnquist.
From the little information in the post it only said he mentioned two or more, not specifying Stephens, so he may be on to something that others aren't tracking again. I think it was Kristol who pointed to Ginzberg a couple of weeks ago as likely to drop out for health reasons and that she was in worse shape than Rehnquist.
None of which negates him being both arrogant and (often) unreliable. I get the feeling that he all too often lets personal likes and dislikes affect what he reports. I think he expected to be brought into Bush 43's administration as some form of senior advisor and when the call didn't come he turned nasty on those that were included.
This falls under the category of "too good to be true." I'll believe Stevens' resignation when I see it.
And by the way, I love the pressure on the President/RNC against Alberto Gonzalez. Keep it up. They have to be made to understand that if they thwart us on the originalist judges, they are throwing away (i) their ability to raise funds from us, and (ii) their only chance to build this enduring Republican majority, as Karl Rove has envisioned. As they say in Texas, "You got to dance with the one who brung you."
The days of us "trusting" a stealth candidate are over. The stage has been set, and we have been campaigning for this moment for years.
As George Allen's daddy once said, "The future is now."
"Stevens would be huge. Probably all out filibuster..."
I heard both Lindsay Graham and John McCain say that if the RATS filibuster on idological grounds, that the deal would be over, and they'd side with... well, their own side. Hopefully, we'll get the "nuclear option", and then we'll be able to get some real conservatives on the Supreme Court.
Well, maybe it's a fantasy, but it's possible. :-)
I will still vote, but more and more of my votes will be cast for libertarian candidates.
they don't see it as a balance of power. to them, the right is overly empowered and the only fair and balanced way for governing now is for republicans to restrain themselves from "republican" thinking, planning, and legislating and let democratic ideas and policies have an equal seat at every table. They have no idea how badly they have lost in middle america where the votes and real folks are. They think a judge somewhere can just set it all straight, fix it. That's why the SCOTUS replacements represent armageddon for them.
Throw in Ginsburg and get the codes for the "football."
.
I believe that was sarcasm...
calm down...it will be alright

McCain and Graham like being in the driver's seat. You can bet that any "resolution" to the SC confirmation will involve them finding a reason to spend a lot of time in front of the cameras.
McCain and Graham are our party's answer to the Clintons. All about themselves, as opposed to the party.
Also, remember that we need Arlen Specter's vote. He wasn't part of the "RINO 7", but he's hardly a reliable conservative vote.
I'm not so sure. In effect he set the foreign policy for the administration more than any one else, in the pages of the Weekly Standard. He is that rare thing these days, a public intellectual. I don't think he wants a policy job (other than the informal one he has). I believe he is consulted frequently by various administration members, as I've seen this mentioned in the MSM from time to time.
Lindsay says he does have the votes to prevent any filibuster. We will see...
Sorry, maybe you're right...we're all on edge these days. I didn't see the "/sarcasm" indicator, so I assumed the worst.
I'd rather see them one at a time. I'm afraid that multiple openings will be seen as an opportunity for comprimise by the dims - to get at least one, possibly more, new liberals on the court. Add that to Kennedy, Breier, and Ginsberg, and we'll still have the problem that we've got today.
I keep hearing these rumors that Ruth Bader Ginsberg is in worse health than Rehnquist is, and that her resignation may be imminent as well...
Four nominees for "W"???
This could spell the reuniting of the Kennedy Brothers, because I don't think Teddy the Hutt can take that much strain!
"Lindsay says he does have the votes to prevent any filibuster. We will see..."
Incredible, isn't it? Can you imagine some other senator making this sort of statement when LBJ was majority leader?
bythe way...I'm not a fan of his politics or ethics...I am just contrasting his mastery of that body with the current majority leader...whose name I can't remember because everytime I try to pull up his name from my cranium, all I get is the image of a jellyfish
First President Bush has to nominate a real conservative.
