Poll: Californians back unions over Schwarzenegger

SAN FRANCISCO – An overwhelming majority of Californians approve of the unions Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been attacking while they disapprove of the job Schwarzenegger is doing, according to a new statewide poll. The poll released Thursday by the Survey and Policy Research Institute at San Jose State University is just the latest to show the governor has been losing support in recent months as he's pushed several ballot measures aimed at curbing the power of Democrats and public employee unions in state government.

Schwarzenegger's approval ratings have fallen from 59 percent of Californians surveyed in January to 34 percent last week. His disapproval rating has more than doubled from 26 percent in January to 55 percent in the new poll.

Meanwhile, 57 percent of registered voters surveyed said they generally approved of labor unions while 32 percent disapproved. If there's a fight over school funding in the Nov. 8 special election, 60 percent of voters said they were more likely to support teachers and school administrators, compared to 31 percent who said they would likely support the governor.

"Attempts to frame the political debate in California as a battle between Gov. Schwarzenegger and his reforms on the one hand versus greedy unions and special interests on the other hand have yet to gain much traction," poll director Phil Trounstine said.

Schwarzenegger is pushing three initiatives in the special election. He wants to impose a state spending cap, strip lawmakers of the ability to draw their own political boundaries and make it harder for teachers to get tenure.

The poll, conducted from June 27-July 1, was drawn from interviews with 928 adults, including 686 registered voters. It has a sampling error of 3.2 percentage points for adults and 3.7 percentage points for voters.

Maybe that is one big reason why their state does not work.

As I predicted.

He should have started with redistricting reform.

No one asked me.

Gack. I do think I need to get serious about moving away from the west coast.

Associated Press

With uncharacteristic dispatch, the state Legislature approved California's $117.5 billion budget on Thursday, spending Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger the same agreement he struck earlier this week with top legislative leaders.

considering those polled are fairly likely to be DEMs or union members, this is like polling Kansas on whether or not they support the Wheat crop.

I see the poll didn't report on one of Schwarzenegger's initiatives. I wonder why that is.

Most polls today are a sneaky way of floating an editorial without hanging your a** out on the line.

It appears that California is run by the labor leaders.

The only time I've ever been polled was during the last election, it was totally a small local thing. A local lefty was making some calls and I wound up talking to him for at least 45 minutes, telling him stuff I read on FR, and he kept saying things like "Oh my God! Really?" He was probably a DUer.

Later I saw him in town (reeaal small town) and recognized him by voice. He never did admit whether I convinced him to vote for Bush or not.

Anyway, polsters never call me.

More specifically, California is run by the radical left -- the media is owned by the left, as you can clearly see in this kangaroo poll. This is what happens when the idiot, stupid public puts the power in the hands of socialists.

The state will die into a state of mediocrity it has never seen before.

Any poll issued out of any California educational unit is automatically assigned a "no credibility" rating. Don't be fooled. Even in California, unions are about as popular as insurance companies.

Simply can't be believed.

The pity is that Arnold and his supporters are influenced more by this kind of NEA propoganda than what the voters clearly say they want: a complete reformation of state government and financial policy. Unfortunately, Arnold always plays to the vested interest bleachers, never to the voters, because he really doesn't believe us.

California is not run by labor leaders.

It is run by hard-line Communists, buttressed by Mexican 5th columnists.

The unions are one of the beneficiaries, but the reality of who the animals are is beyond belief.

Read about the Burtons, Art Torres, and of course, charming freaks like Jackie Goldberg and Sheila Kuehl.

These grim Stalinists are so far off the deep end, you cannot try to interpret it in classic "unions vs. management" characterizations. They went way past that a long time ago.

These people aren't out to balance the distribution of wealth. They are out to utterly destroy what was once America and replace it with something utterly alien and insane.

And the faster the masses realize this, if they ever do, the better chance California has to survive. Even today, this state is in a condition of insanity beyond belief -- THE INMATES ARE RUNNING THE ASYLUM.

This is really depressing. I really hoped, during the recall and Arnold's election, that the LaLaLanders had finally recognized the dismal state they were in. Evidently, I gave them too much credit.

They don't like grownups. They like their childlike vision of Utopia and no blackouts or budget crises or failed schools or bloated bureaucracy is going to disabuse them of it. And then they'll have some huge natural disaster and stomp their feet and insist we bail them out. Bah.
