This morning, the civilized world watched with concern as the people of London saw the face of violence and brutality. We offer our deepest sympathies to the families who have lost loved ones and to those who were wounded.
Too often the global struggle against violent extremists is discussed in a context that can distract from the harsh reality that its victims are innocent mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, and neighbors we see and work with every day.
Images from London have shown faces filled with tears and shock. Such faces are sadly familiar to us here in America. However, reports from London are already telling of calm passengers, compassionate strangers, and courageous rescuers. And that too is familiar -- the grace and humanity that contrasts vividly with the hatred and violence of terrorists.
The London attacks have a special resonance for the American people -- for America has no stronger or closer ally in the world than Great Britain. We are bound together by a common heritage, a common language, and a deeply shared commitment to freedom. As President Bush indicated earlier this morning, the United States will stand with the British people with unflinching resolve.
Though it is not yet known with certainty precisely who is responsible, we do know terrorists intentions. They strike without warning and without regard for human life in the hope that they can frighten and intimidate free people -- to change our way of life. And they won't stop until their side or our side has prevailed.
But if these terrorists thought they could intimidate the people of a great nation, they picked the wrong people and the wrong nation. For generations, tyrants, fascists, and terrorists have sought to carry out their violent designs upon the British people only to founder upon its unrelenting shores.
Before long, I suspect that those responsible for these acts will encounter British steel. Their kind of steel has an uncommon strength. It does not bend or break.
The British have learned from history that this kind of evil must be confronted. It cannot be appeased. Our two countries understand well that once a people give in to terrorists demands, whatever they are, their demands will grow.
The British people are determined and resolute. And I know the people of the United States are proud to stand at their side.
Good stuff from Rummy. And God Bless the Brits.
British Steel.
Indeed.
Well and truly put.
And thank you, Mr. Secretary, for your steadfastness, determination and brilliance over the last five years, as a leader of our our government and military in facing down these murderous barbarians. Without you and others like you who are willing to stand up in the face of the heated outrage of screaming halfwits like Ted Kennedy and other leftists, our own country might not be standing fast as we are.
Rumsfeldt is just terrific.
And thanks for your post - you also hit it out of the park
(or hit it for a six as the British would say - cricket term).
Sec Rumsfeld:
And today is the 20th anniversary, unhappy anniversary, of the attack on the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. That attack killed 240-plus Americans. Shortly after the attack, I received a phone call from Secretary of State George Shultz, saying that President Reagan and he wanted to meet with me, and asked me to serve for a period as the personal envoy of the president to the Middle East. I remember that experience very well, and if you'll think back to it, it was a -- just an enormously violent event. And the photographs of it were photographs of a great many wonderful Americans in a building that had been nearly totally destroyed.
After that, the immediate reaction was a human reaction, and cement barricades were put up around buildings housing American troops, so that trucks couldn't willingly or easily get into and attack a major building; barricades somewhat like the ones you see around here. And of course, the next thing that happened was the terrorists starting using rocket-propelled grenades and lobbing them over those barricades. The barricades are fine for trucks; they're not so fine for airborne missiles of various types.
The next thing, if you went down to the Corniche in Beirut and looked up, you'd see embassy buildings draped with mesh, a wire mesh, the idea being that when the rocket-propelled grenades would hit the mesh, they'd bounce off. And so, the point being that terrorists go to school on you, and they adjust their tactics. The mesh worked for a short period, and pretty soon, they started hitting soft targets, people going to and from where they were working.
I mention this because it is a point that I've tried to make from time to time; namely, that a terrorist can, in fact, attack at any time, in any place, using any technique, and free people are not able to defend at every place, at every moment of the day or night, against every conceivable type of technique. The advantage is with the attacker. And the only way to defeat terrorists is to take the war to them; to go after them where they are, where they live, where they plan, where they hide; go after their finances; go after the people who harbor and assist them; and reduce the number of them, and the number of people supporting them and the number of people financing them, so that the numbers of new terrorists coming into the process, trained and financed and ready to go out and kill innocent men, women and children across the world, so that that number is reduced. That's the president's policy. It's the correct policy.
Whenever I hear Churchill's quote..."We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields, and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!" I think of some Brit asking "Couldn't we fight them in Germany?"
Luckily we ARE fighting the terrorists in Iraq; not on the beaches, fields, and streets of the USA.
Wow--Rummy hit a home run. Great stuff.
I hope he's right.
The incentive must be changed.
Here's one way. A bomb goes off in a non-Muslim area and the Muslim section of town is assessed a tax to cover the damage. On the face of it, it'll seem unfair. And it is unfair.
But within the Muslim culture, news travels from one person to a trusted family member to another to another to another. Husband to brother to father to uncle to wife to husband etc etc... Many in these communities know something.
Communication in a state like Iran is almost as fast as us having FOX News. And since in totalitarian countries, your life depends on the quality of the news, folks get it right. I assume many people know more than they're willing to say because there's no downside to keeping the information to themselves, but there's massive downside to talking.
Financial burdens (a la The Visit) will work. It's not perfect not fair, but fairer than hundreds of people being killed or wounded. There's a price to pay for being in a civilized country - and it's time for Muslim immigrants to pay their share.
Agreed. However, I wish our government would chuck the political correctness cr_p and fight them here as well, because they ARE here. We could start by protecting our borders.
Yes, we'll stand with the Brits. God bless 'em.
Without a doubt. God Bless the Brits.
Not yet, but don't even for a moment believe we are immune from further carnage because the enemy is already among us, biding their time while awaiting orders to attack.
Well said Rummy!
Thank you.
