The Day After Date Created: 11 Jul, 2005, 12:46 PM
So much to tell, but so little time. I am minutes away from boarding a plane for Detroit. I'll come back with more later when I have time. Until then, I leave you with a story from last night that speaks volumes.
Still beaming as we boarded a helicopter that would commute us to the airport yesterday, Dale Jr. said there are many reasons why this win is special. But none more than it gives his fans the opportunity to smile.
"If there's one place I would've liked to been, it's in the living rooms of all my fans, just to see their reaction," he told me. "That would've been cool."
That said, I hope you're enjoying your Monday... as much as Dale Jr. thinks you are.
Now Junior wins and says "my crew won this for me" and "we owe Tony, Jr. and the Napa Auto Parts team a lot of credit for helping us dial in our front end."
Where are Junior's detractors now? Silent.
EXACTLY right!
My son and I were screaming and cheering so loudly those last fifteen laps my wife actually came into the living room and showed some interest in Nascar. She has NEVER done that before.
There was a quote that I posted a few weeks ago that went something like 'I can take the heat, but I feel bad for the guys who are not used to being in this spotlight.'
As far as screaming I think my neighbors probably thought the snake was back in my house. lol
The product manager from Goodyear had another theory as to why the tires were such a headache all day.
When tires wear out quicker, they get cooler. The tires werent wearing out quick enough, so they got too hot and bubbled up, said Rick Heinrich, who was answering more questions about his product than he is used to. Were going to take what we learned today and make adjustments.
[Adjustments, I think they better & about time]
I dont know how to really describe it. Winning with this team that has been beat up so bad all year long by the critics is so cool. I got the easiest job in the whole company, and they got the hardest. When I dont win the race, they shoulder all that responsibility like theyre not good, or they dont build good cars. And thats not the case. Theyve given a winning effort since day one, but we havent been able to get wins. Its not always the guy behind the wheel, or the shock guy, or the suspension guy, or everybody that puts the car together.
It takes more than that, and were starting to figure it out. The satisfaction for Sundays win is in the face of my team. Ive won races, and I want to win a whole lot more. But to see what they felt Sunday, it means more to me than taking the trophy home and setting it on the mantle. Its awesome to give it to those guys, and Im glad Im a part of it.
Something about not having a decent car and when you have to run in the back, those things happen.
I was thinking about ya as Jr. crossed the finish line-congratulations!! Jr. looked as though a great weight was lifted off of him and his crew, and I'll wager that you feel better too! Now, if Harvick can stop his backslide, maybe both of em' can make the chase. That would be great!
Someone has to take the blame.
Here's the 29 car testing at Indy today.
There is a Nascar show on CNBC about the corporate end. On NOW.
Thanks for the reminder.
Sorry if that brings ya pain! Bad week?
Have a friend in Alabama that's a die hard Jr fan like you, BUT she has no power to crow about the win.
Not that my benched drivers did much better, about 10 places all combined, but I had Happy until Sunday morning and changed him with Backflipper. 19th vs. 39th.
Update on Stacker2's sudden departure from Kenny Wallace - the parent company is preparing to defend itself against a heap of ephedra-related lawsuits.
Also have an update on the Wood to #2 rumors - the supposed test didn't happen, and Wood won't be going to Rusty's ride; all invovled are denying (makes sense because the Wood Brothers have a long relationship with Ford and Jon himself probably has a Ford contract).
