Gonzales, seen as a moderate, has sometimes been mentioned as a candidate who might not spur vigorous opposition from pro-Democratic groups.

Don't be silly. Absolutely any candidate who does not come right out and guarantee the Dems a pro-abortion position (and whatever else they demand) will be Borked. They've been looking forward to this bit of hysteria for the last five years now. It does NOT matter who Bush nominates, he or she will be attacked on principle, the principle being that as a Bush nominee he or she ought to be attacked.

Let's face it, the Dems really don't have anything else to crow about. This is the one fight they think they can win simply by doing what they do best: smearing, screaming, and behaving like lunatics. It's the worst side of a party that doesn't have a good one.

I agree, but they have used up much of their political capital Borking lower court nomanees. The people are sick and tired of their antics, and many of the 2006 democrat candidates know this and are fearing for their jobs. They saw what happened to (one of the most powerful men in Washington) Tommy Daschle in 2004.

If they want to maintain their jobs in Washington they would be well advised to take heed.
