2008 presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has failed in her first major foreign initiative - a high profile bid to bring the 2012 Olympic games to New York City.
Hours before this morning's announcement that London would host the 2012 games, Clinton was pulling out all the stops to bring the sports extravaganza to her constituents back home.
Mrs. Clinton told reporters in Singapore, where the Olympic committee was meeting, that the Big Apple "exemplifies Olympic values every single day. Living in New York is like living in an Olympic Village - you have every language from every corner of the globe."
While New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg headed up the U.S. delegation, and former boxing great Muhammad Ali joined in the effort - it was Mrs. Clinton, whose global popularity has been heralded in the world's media, who was the clear star of the U.S. team.
In comments to the Associated Press, she noted that the Summer Games have never been held in New York.
"We have lived the Olympics, now I'd like for us to have a chance to host the Olympics," she said.
In arguments before the committee, the former first lady even invoked the specter of the 9/11 attacks:
"We're standing here a little less than four years from the time when we were attacked and we're telling you that New York City is the place to bring the 2012 Olympics because people of New York are resilient," she insisted. "They're extraordinary in their capacity to pull together and plan for the future."
Before this morning's announcement, the AP called Mrs. Clinton "the top political heavyweight for New York's [Olympic] delegation."
But now that she's failed to come through, don't look for the press to spend much time dwelling on what went wrong.
Sure does. Why aren't the Dems getting mad at Hillary for invoking 9/11? They should be giving their news conferences on how disgraceful she is for doing that.
Singapore is pretty strict about dirt in the streets - I'm surprized she wasn't caned for daring to show her visage and then deported immediately.
I am in the NYC area, and like a lot of people I am happy the Olympics are not coming here. I know there's another side to the argument, but I just thought it would be a lot of hassle and a money-loser.
As for Sen Clinton, I cannot for the life of me understand how liberals and feminists can champion this woman for essentially riding her husband's coattails. Supposedly her contacts gained when her husband was President were going to help. If Laura bush tried that the left would be screaming from the rooftops! But there's a lot of criticisms I could raise about Hillary now, aren't there - I don't have all day!
I predict (hope!!!) that Hillary will be like the EU constitution - loved by the elites but rejected by the people once they are asked for their votes. Let's hope the Reopublicans can keep it together and she is thwarted.
Bloomberg, a RINO loser and socialist.
Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) Muslim America hater, draft dodger and loudmouthed braggart.
Hillary, left wing America hater, socialist and shrill, power mad lesbian bitch and self promoter.
What a team.
The Olympics are not bargain. I still remember the Munich Olympics. What would the Islamofascists have planned for NYC? A nuke?
Most New Yorkers DID NOT WANT the Olympic games. It's hard enough to get around in the city even on a normal day. And where would they have the aquatic events? Way out in the Hamptons? I'm sure the wealthy people out there would have just loved the congestion!
Laura bush = Laura Bush
Me too. I live in Queens and I work in Manhattan. Just the thought of the mess that the Olympics will bring to this city in regards to traffic, security and money lost is a big turn off.
Agreed!
Bump from Buffalo!
hehehehe~
She was hoping to be able to attend and HOST the Olympics as the President of the United States in 2012. This was just a little advance planning on her part,,,,just in case. Oh well, she can now try for the winter Olympics in her long-range Presidential planning.
Besides (Hillary Failed) HEH HEH! Oh that makes it even sweeter! ;-)
Maybe they mistook her for a Sumo Wrestler (those big thighs ya know)
LOL Did Hillary go up to Buffalo on her (I'm pretending I care about upstate NY) tour yet?
True.
I just can't even stomach the thought of her this morning . . .
(Why should today be any different?)
Hillary's a "heavyweight" no matter the situation.
I saw on the news that Fr*nce did not get it either!
