One of the Youngest Catholic Cardinals Excommunicates Woman Who Claims to be a Priest

LYON, France, July 5, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A French Cardinal has excommunicated a Catholic woman claiming she was "ordained" as a priest by three women who call themselves Roman Catholic bishops.  For those supposing the next generation of church leaders will turn the church even more politically correct, the action by one of the Church's youngest Cardinals will come as a shocker.  Lyon's Cardinal Archbishop Philippe Barbarin, 55, has followed in the footsteps of Pope Benedict XVI.  Cardinal Barbarin excommunicated the woman who went through a false 'ordination' yesterday.  Pope Benedict XVI, acting in 2002 as Cardinal Ratzinger, officially excommunicated two of the women "bishops" who performed the ceremony.

Cardinal BarbarinGenevieve Beney, a 56-year-old married physical education teacher and mother of two, was "ordained" Saturday on a boat on the Saone River near the eastern French city, by self-proclaimed "bishops" from the dissident movement Women's Ordination Worldwide as 60 activists who support female ordination looked on.

"This is not a rupture with the Roman Catholic Church," Beney claimed before the ceremony. "If there is a rupture on my part, it is with a situation that I consider to be obsolete and unjust to women."

"This act . . . does not fulfil any of the conditions required by the Catholic Church, and such a ceremony unequivocally constitutes a serious act of rupture with the Catholic Church," Lyon's Cardinal Barbarin corrected in a statement, according to a Reuters report. "There will be no truth to the words that will be pronounced," Barbarin said before the ceremony. "For many Catholics, this will be a source of useless injury and suffering."

Nine women activists, eight American and one Canadian, have announced that on July 25 they will conduct their own "ordination" ceremony on a boat on the St. Lawrence River. When LifeSiteNews.com contacted the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops about the impending "ordination" of the Canadian woman later this month, a spokesman there, unlike Cardinal Barbarin, said the CCCB had "no comment" and no plans in place, at least that the CCCB was willing to disclose, as to how they would respond to such an event.

"Who is Jadot?"

I was going to be a smart aleck and ask if Jadot was someone waiting for Godot. But instead I did a web search.

Here's some info on Jadot. Yuck.

Lovely. I'm not sure how this exonerates Mahoney. The Church teaches that the conscience must be conformed to the Magisterium. Just because Mahoney has always been a socialist at heart, it doesn't take him off the hook for acting like his own personal pope.

My intention is not to bash RCs...but I really find the most recalcitrant, hard-lined, dug-in-heels, about any progressive opinions to do with the Church or its missions among this community.
The Church's history, I trust you'll all agree, has not always been a glorious one what with the inquisition, several Middle Ages popes documented as having father children, the crusades, a split with the Eastern rite, the ordeal of Galileo, etc., etc...
And while neither the Apocrypha nor Ghostic gospels are doctrinal, there are parts of both that bore interest to the scholars who conducted the first Council of Nicaea; so I hope that you all will take the same advice you offered me and read them.

O, so now you make up for it by repeating the standard publik-skrool slanders against the church, meandog?

Learn a little history:

*The inquisition was established to save the accused from the barbaric treatment of the secular nations. After a trial which was far more civilized than anything else happening in the world at the time (admittedly, still short of modern standards), the guilty faced at most 15 minutes of torture.

*The crusades saved Western Civilzation, no thanks to the Protestant leaders who saw them as an opportunity to attack a distracted church. The crusades were also a defensive operation, launched only after 3/4ths of Christendom had fallen to the Islamic horde.

*Not one pope fathered a child while Pope. Several popes were however scandalous louts BY CATHOLIC STANDARDS who had been quite sinful BEFORE their ordinations.

*Gallileo was excommunicated not because of his scientific theory of heliocentrism, which had attracted no negative attention when first proposed by a Catholic monk, but because he used this theory to argue that the bible was wrong.

Oh, and I have read the gnostic gospels. They are a wholly separate form of literature from the aposcryphal gospels. The apocryphal gospels were often myths, legends and fables. The Nicene Council recognized many of them to be fictional, or mythological, but sometimes frequently pious. The gnostic gospels, on the other hand, were considered simply evil: pagan corruptions of the gospel. Again, find out what the gnsotics believed, and what their methods of creating the gospels were. You will never refer to them again, I assure you.

By the way, I found the reference in the gnostic "Gospel of Mary," which refers to Jesus exalting Mary Magdeline above the disciples:

(pages 11 - 14 are missing from the manuscript)

Chapter 8:
. . . it.
10) And desire said, I did not see you descending, but now I see you ascending. Why do you lie since you belong to me? 11) The soul answered and said, I saw you. You did not see me nor recognize me. I served you as a garment and you did not know me. 12) When it said this, it (the soul) went away rejoicing greatly.
13) Again it came to the third power, which is called ignorance. 14) The power questioned the soul, saying, Where are you going? In wickedness are you bound. But you are bound; do not judge!
15) And the soul said, Why do you judge me, although I have not judged? 16) I was bound, though I have not bound. 17) I was not recognized. But I have recognized that the All is being dissolved, both the earthly things and the heavenly.
18) When the soul had overcome the third power, it went upwards and saw the fourth power, which took seven forms. 19) The first form is darkness, the second desire, the third ignorance, the fourth is the excitement of death, the fifth is the kingdom of the flesh, the sixth is the foolish wisdom of flesh, the seventh is the wrathful wisdom. These are the seven powers of wrath. 20) They asked the soul, Whence do you come slayer of men, or where are you going, conqueror of space?
21) The soul answered and said, What binds me has been slain, and what turns me about has been overcome, 22) and my desire has been ended, and ignorance has died. 23) In a aeon I was released from a world, and in a Type from a type, and from the fetter of oblivion which is transient. 24) From this time on will I attain to the rest of the time, of the season, of the aeon, in silence.
Chapter 9
1) When Mary had said this, she fell silent, since it was to this point that the Savior had spoken with her. 2) But Andrew answered and said to the brethren, Say what you wish to say about what she has said. I at least do not believe that the Savior said this. For certainly these teachings are strange ideas. 3) Peter answered and spoke concerning these same things. 4) He questioned them about the Savior: Did He really speak privately with a woman and not openly to us? Are we to turn about and all listen to her? Did He prefer her to us?
5) Then Mary wept and said to Peter, My brother Peter, what do you think? Do you think that I have thought this up myself in my heart, or that I am lying about the Savior?
6) Levi answered and said to Peter, Peter you have always been hot tempered. 7) Now I see you contending against the woman like the adversaries. 8) But if the Savior made her worthy, who are you indeed to reject her? Surely the Savior knows her very well. 9) That is why He loved her more than us. Rather let us be ashamed and put on the perfect Man, and separate as He commanded us and preach the gospel, not laying down any other rule or other law beyond what the Savior said. 10) And when they heard this they began to go forth to proclaim and to preach.

The Church has exactly ONE mission: to save souls. Period. No others.

The split was not a good thing--but from this vantage point, we can all agree that it takes two to tango--or to un-tango. You will note that Benedict XVI is continuing the effort of JPII to reconcile with the Eastern Orth.

If you liked 9/11, continue to bash the Crusades. They did not finish the job...

Dangus provided the rest of the answers.

Now would anyone like to interpret what the hell that all means?

Take this passage for example:

The first form is darkness, the second desire, the third ignorance, the fourth is the excitement of death, the fifth is the kingdom of the flesh, the sixth is the foolish wisdom of flesh, the seventh is the wrathful wisdom. These are the seven powers of wrath.

If I didn't know better I'd think the author was hopped up on LSD.

Meandog:

If you are not a hard-core Roman Catholic, I have not the slightest interest in your advice as to my practice of my religion or as to the tenets thereof. Jesus Christ founded the Roman Catholic Church upon Simon bar Jonah whom he renamed Peter.

Now, just how might we Catholics "progress" from Jesus Christ?????? Recalcitrant? You betcha! Hard-line? You betcha! Dug in heels? You betcha! Progressive opinions????? Not in this Catholic's lifetime and not in God's lifetime!

The job of Roman Catholics and of the Roman Catholic Church is to militantly confront the morally and socially spineless and evil world. To be IN THE WORLD'S FACE.

I do not share any belief in the libels of the likes of Lorraine Boettner or of Jack Chick or of the father of Bibi Netanyahu against the Roman Catholic Church and as to the Holy Inquisition. You live in the 21st Century United States and have no understanding of the concept of Christendom which underlay the Holy Inquisition.

If by Apocrypha, you mean Books of the Bible whose teachings were inconvenient to the reformation, then I have certainly read them as part of Scripture. If you mean such generally gnostic pseudo-Scriptural trash as The Gospel of Mary, the Gospel of Jesus, etc., why should any Christian pay any attention whatsoever? I also have no "scholarly" interest in witchcraft or cannibalism or speculation for its own sake opr in the Da Vinci Code fantasies. Why should I?

As you can see in the current jihadist atmosphere, the Crusades were criticizable primarily for their failure to put an end to Islam in its cradle. No one ever claimed that popes are sinless men. That quality would be called impeccability. Impeccability is not included in infallibility. Galileo accepted his discipline (which was to stop propagating his ideas WITHIN CHRISTENDOM until the Church could catch up with those ideas theologically and examine them dispassionately). Galileo's perceived need for personal credit for what has turned out to be intellectually valid work was SECONDARY to his obligations as a Catholic towards his Church. If you don't want to live that way, then do not be a Catholic. We are not going the "progressive" route to satisfy you or any other "progressive." The cafeteria is closed.

The split with the Eastern Orthodox (NOT with the Eastern Rite which is fully Roman in discipline) is primarily disciplinary and you won't find one Catholic in a thousand who will understand much less get worked up about the only doctrinal question: Did Christ proceed from the Father alone or from the Father and the Son (Filioque)?

That you define yourself as not attacking Catholicism does not mean that you define yourself accurately. Actions speak louder than words. If you use the usual litany of anti-Catholicism, be not surprised when we perceive you as anti-Catholic. The Roman Catholic Church is not "progressive" and, thanks to the guarantees of Jesus Christ, it NEVER WILL BE.

If I want to read lunacy, I will read poor Kit Smart, who at least was honest about being crazy:

For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry.
For he is the servant of the Living God duly and daily serving him.
For at the first glance of the glory of God in the East he worships in his way.
For this is done by wreathing his body seven times round with elegant quickness.
For then he leaps up to catch the musk, which is the blessing of God upon his prayer.
For he rolls upon prank to work it in.
For having done duty and received blessing he begins to consider himself.
For this he performs in ten degrees.
For first he looks upon his forepaws to see if they are clean.
For secondly he kicks up behind to clear away there.
For thirdly he works it upon stretch with the forepaws extended.
For fourthly he sharpens his paws by wood.
For fifthly he washes himself.
For sixthly he rolls upon wash.
For seventhly he fleas himself, that he may not be interrupted upon the beat.
For eighthly he rubs himself against a post.
For ninthly he looks up for his instructions.
For tenthly he goes in quest of food.
For having consider'd God and himself he will consider his neighbour.
For if he meets another cat he will kiss her in kindness.
For when he takes his prey he plays with it to give it a chance.
For one mouse in seven escapes by his dallying.
For when his day's work is done his business more properly begins.
For he keeps the Lord's watch in the night against the adversary.
For he counteracts the powers of darkness by his electrical skin and glaring eyes.
For he counteracts the Devil, who is death, by brisking about the life.
For in his morning orisons he loves the sun and the sun loves him.
For he is of the tribe of Tiger.
For the Cherub Cat is a term of the Angel Tiger.
For he has the subtlety and hissing of a serpent, which in goodness he suppresses.
For he will not do destruction, if he is well-fed, neither will he spit without provocation.
For he purrs in thankfulness, when God tells him he's a good Cat.
For he is an instrument for the children to learn benevolence upon.
For every house is incomplete without him and a blessing is lacking in the spirit.
For the Lord commanded Moses concerning the cats at the departure of the Children of Israel from Egypt.
For every family had one cat at least in the bag.
For the English Cats are the best in Europe.
For he is the cleanest in the use of his forepaws of any quadruped.
For the dexterity of his defence is an instance of the love of God to him exceedingly.
For he is the quickest to his mark of any creature.
For he is tenacious of his point.
For he is a mixture of gravity and waggery.
For he knows that God is his Saviour.
For there is nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest.
For there is nothing brisker than his life when in motion.
For he is of the Lord's poor and so indeed is he called by benevolence perpetually--Poor Jeoffry! poor Jeoffry! the rat has bit thy throat.
For I bless the name of the Lord Jesus that Jeoffry is better.
For the divine spirit comes about his body to sustain it in complete cat.
For his tongue is exceeding pure so that it has in purity what it wants in music.
For he is docile and can learn certain things.
For he can set up with gravity which is patience upon approbation.
For he can fetch and carry, which is patience in employment.
For he can jump over a stick which is patience upon proof positive.
For he can spraggle upon waggle at the word of command.
For he can jump from an eminence into his master's bosom.
For he can catch the cork and toss it again.
For he is hated by the hypocrite and miser.
For the former is afraid of detection.
For the latter refuses the charge.
For he camels his back to bear the first notion of business.
For he is good to think on, if a man would express himself neatly.
For he made a great figure in Egypt for his signal services.
For he killed the Ichneumon-rat very pernicious by land.
For his ears are so acute that they sting again.
For from this proceeds the passing quickness of his attention.
For by stroking of him I have found out electricity.
For I perceived God's light about him both wax and fire.
For the Electrical fire is the spiritual substance, which God sends from heaven to sustain the bodies both of man and beast.
For God has blessed him in the variety of his movements.
For, tho he cannot fly, he is an excellent clamberer.
For his motions upon the face of the earth are more than any other quadruped.
For he can tread to all the measures upon the music.
For he can swim for life.
For he can creep.
-Christopher Smart, Jubilate Agno

And you get Ten Degrees of Cat Performance, instead of just Seven Powers of Wrath.

Go back to the library of Jack Chick Comix and wallow in your fantasies. Who died and left you God as a non-Catholic to tell Catholics what to believe or how to practice OUR Faith? Do you also believe in The Tales of Maria Monk????

There are a lot more than one hundred Catholic priests who are married. Many are in the actual Eastern Rite (which is part of the Roman Catholic Church and is under the authority of the pope as opposed to the Eastern Orthodox schism with which you apparently confuse with the Eastern Rite.) None are bishops. Some are admitted under the provisions made for Anglican and Lutheran pastors coming back to Catholicism. What Peter's successor may bind on earth will be bound in heaven and what he shall loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. He has the Keys to the Kingdom. It was in all the Bibles. See Matthew.

Many of us, whether you like it or not, will walk with the ETERNAL TRUTH of the Roman Catholic Faith. As ninenot has told you, we are presently living in "the Dark Ages." What you think were the "Dark Ages" were actually The Age of Faith which always gets the goat of gnostics.

Your state of knowledge or lack thereof ought to be embarassing to you. Do yourself a favor and mind your own business.

Right up there with the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Surprised Jack Chick hasn't made a comic book of it yet.

First you either lie or are totally ignorant about the Sacraments of the Church.

Then say "your intention is not to bash RCs" but you just regurgitate the verbatim party line that the anti-Catholics have circulated for years.

It may not be your intention, but it's sure working out that way.
