Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Hassan Rohani has resigned, according to the official Iranian news agency Irna.

Mr Rohani has led the Islamic state's often combative discussions with the European Union since October 2003.

Citing an "informed source", Irna says that Mr Rohani sent his resignation letter to President Mohammad Khatami.

No reason was given for the move, which follows the election in Iran of a hardline president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Be interesting to see how long it takes to get a replacement. Can't rule out that it may be a stall tactic.
But he may just be a friend of Rafsanjani's.
