Secret Mission Brings Four Fathers Home to Georgia

ATLANTA, July 5, 2005 — With thousands of U.S. service members serving overseas, spreading liberty and freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan, many Americans back home took time this Independence Day to recognize the efforts of these brave men and women.

For four Georgia-based soldiers serving in Iraq and their families, this Independence Day will be one they will never forget.

"The four soldiers would secretly return to the United States, while their wives and children, unaware their loved ones had returned home, were invited to the parade to be part of a ceremony honoring military spouses."

Organizers for the Atlanta Fourth of July Parade contacted the Army about the possibility of reuniting some soldiers with their families during the opening ceremony of the parade.

The emotional reunion in the middle of Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta created many a teary eye among the spectators

It's working pretty well right here too.

U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Stephen Lucas greets his family after having not seen them since December of last year when he deployed to Iraq. Lucas participated in a surprise reunion at the city of Atlanta's 4th of July parade.
