If you can't retreat to at least 12 feet...There's a number to keep in my head. Now I have to make sure I know what it looks like under stress.
That is the distance from the other side of an ordinary bedroom to the door.

She had that wrong. It should go like this:
STOP! BANG... or I'll shoot.
That reminds me of the firearms training course I once took. We were supposed to practice saying "don't move!" then shooting the target after seeing that it was a hostile.
One time, I forgot the shout the command, so after shooting the desired number of sounds, I shouted "don't move!"
Got some chuckles from the class and the instructor.
