Madrid Holds Huge Gay Rally After Same-Sex Marriage Law Passed

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Tens of thousands of people, many dancing or banging drums, packed the streets of Madrid on Saturday to celebrate Spain's new law legalizing gay marriage.

"This is infinitely gay. There are no words to express it," Ivan Sanchez, a 26-year-old pharmacist, said as the throng snaked its way through the capital.

Flatbed trucks crowded with young men and women honked their horns as they made their way through the streets under a blazing summer sun in a procession led by Culture Minister Carmen Calvo and other members of the governing Socialist party, which sponsored the law.

"Now that some of us are more free, all Spaniards are more free," said Cholo Soto, 30, a government clerk who joined the march.

The Interior Ministry put attendance at 100,000, but the turnout looked much bigger.

The rally culminated by spilling into Plaza de Colon.

In the same square in 2003, the late Pope John Paul II said Mass for an estimated 1 million people and said traditionally Roman Catholic Spain had to re-embrace its religious roots. The church is vehemently opposed to the new same-sex marriage law.

Gay couples are not expected to start getting married until late this month because of pre-ceremony paperwork, according to Spain's main federation of gays and lesbians, known as the FELGT.

The law gives same-sex couples the right to wed, adopt children and inherit each other's property, making their legal status the same as that of heterosexual couples.

Spain is the third country in the world to grant full recognition to gay marriage. The others are the Netherlands and Belgium. Canada is expected to follow suit later this month.

Several European countries and a few U.S. states recognize civil unions among same-sex couples but this falls short of treating them like married couples.

When God comes for the sequel to Sodom and Gomorrah this time he will have to destroy the world. Its a sick society that celebrates perversion. Please dont tell me only 1% of the worlds population is homosexual, it just doesnt fly any longer.

That's because they're not married couples. They're an affront to God.

No one expects the Spanish Iniquitousness; their chief weapon is flamboyance. Flamboyance, and sensitivity.

I think it takes more than that. The people have forgotten God, just like the Israelites did so long ago.

Thanks, WOSG, for answering WoofDog123 AND me! I have always thought of Spain, and especially Spanish men, as being VERY masculine. Not to mention the Catholic heritage and influence!

Good answer. Various political systems, socialist and non-socialist, democratic and non-democratic, are susceptible to this. It really has less to do with politics and more to do with the failings of the individuals within the society to accept and obey God.

Don't leave out Uncle Ricardo and Aunt Estelle and Cousins Fernando and Rosario.  There's just no end to the possibilities . . .

After all:

"Now that some of us are more free, all Spaniards are more free," said Cholo Soto, 30, a government clerk who joined the march.

Which really means that in Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium, and soon Canada, there's no need to inquire about your marital status, since marriage doesn't mean squat to them.

The exact number isn't known, but maybe 3% is more realistic. But there is a kind of coalition or unholy alliance among various leftist groups. For instance, gays and lesbians support abortion, even though it isn't especially relevant for them, and in turn pro-abortion fanatics support gays and lesbians.

Many "straight" people see homosexuality as confirmation that when it comes to sex you can do whatever you want. Pleasure, not procreation, is its basic function.

Probably, too, as you get more broken families and children badly raised or brainwashed in school, you will get more homosexual activity. One source of homosexual inclination is thought to be the absence of a father as a role model.

Spanish socialism is basically Communist. The bloody socialists of the 1930s have left an evil legacy. One aspect is hatred of religion, and I'm sure many leftist Spaniards see this as a cause for celebration because it directly challenges the Catholic Church. Socialism has had a strong anti-Christian element to it ever since the French Revolution.

If, as the proponents of homosexual rights claim, homosexuality is as normal and legitimate as heterosexuality, then we can expect to see demands for more gay-friendly commercials and whatnot on tv and movies. Scenes of homosexual men and women should be normal viewing by the public at large. I can't wait for the first big firm to show homosexual couples kissing and getting on like normal heterosexual couples...but I won't hold my breath. They know that their product sales will drop like a rock if they show those scenes.

P.S. I was flipping the channels yesterday, and I came upon a movie on the Sundance network where some guy wanted to kiss Steve Buscemi. Now Buscemi is a great actor, but the thought of a woman kissing Buscemi is revolting much less a man.
