The president of the National Organization for Women declared a "state of emergency" for women's rights and planned a march on the state Capitol as news of Sandra Day O'Connor's retirement reverberated through the group's annual convention.
NOW president Kim Gandy told about 800 NOW members Friday that women need to send a message that they won't tolerate "extremist" judges who set back women's rights.
"This is our time. This is our challenge," Gandy said as the crowd replied by clapping and chanting, "Hell no, we won't go" and "We won't go back."
The group shifted the agenda for their three-day convention to include a march to the Tennessee Capitol on Saturday to "make sure Senator Frist and all senators are going to hear our voices. We're going to march on every Capitol in this country," Gandy said.
The first woman on the Supreme Court, O'Connor was often the swing vote on 5-4 decisions supporting abortion, affirmative action and other contentious social issues. Her retirement leaves Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the only woman on the court. Gandy and former NOW president Eleanor Smeal, now president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, praised O'Connor as a moderate.
"Twenty-four years ago, as president of the National Organization for Women, I testified for Sandra Day O'Connor before the Senate Judiciary Committee," Smeal said. "I knew then that O'Connor, although a conservative voice, would be one who would not permit the elimination of women's fundamental rights, including the right to privacy."
Gandy said the group fears "a nominee along the lines of some of the extremist judges that have been put on the appellate court by George Bush."
NOW members are set to elect their president Saturday night. Gandy, elected in 2001, is being challenged by Rosemary J. Dempsey, a Connecticut lawyer who's held several national and state leadership roles since joining NOW in 1970.
Dempsey wants to focus on attracting younger members and opposing President Bush's economic agenda, which she says inflicts disproportionate harm on women. "We were effective in the 70s, and we're effective now," Dempsey said. "But there has been a backlash. Most young women don't know about NOW these days. If NOW is visible and relevant where they (young members) live, that's what makes NOW powerful."
LOL!!
"Dempsey wants to focus on attracting younger members and opposing President Bush's economic agenda"
First of all, good luck on the younger members, lol. Your supporters don't have children as a matter of principle and that will be your demise(as well as Europe's).
Secondly... economic agenda? What does that have to do with womens rights? Theyre just dropping all pretense of being anything other than a socialist front-group.
What are they gonna do, take up arms? I firmly believe that the only thing that liberals believe worth fighting for is the "right" to kill an unborn child.
Shhhh! We don't want them to know why they're failing. Your statement will give them a clue. :-)
LOL! Good point!
Dempsey wants to focus on attracting younger members...
"Let us help you kill your children and enjoy a lifetime of guilt and short hair."
"We were effective in the 70s, and we're effective now," Dempsey said. "But there has been a backlash. Most young women don't know about NOW these days. If NOW is visible and relevant where they (young members) live, that's what makes NOW powerful."
Backlash? Irrelevancy? You bet. A result brought about in great part by the fact that NOW said NOTHING critical of President Clinton when it was revealed he was having sexual relations with 'that woman' (his much younger, barely over 18 employee/intern). And that's not to mention Ms. Broddrick, Ms. Jones, Ms. Willey, etc...
In fact, NOW defended Clinton to the nation, basically saying what he did 'wasn't so bad'. So much for standing up for women everywhere!
In other words, if NOW had principles to stand for their beliefs in EVERY situation, they might still be relevant. Now they are just another political lobbying group, picking and choosing based on political affiliation instead of principle. Can you say anachronism?
P.S. Janice Rogers Brown for Supreme Court Justice!!!
WoW! It's no wonder they aren't married. It's probably the reason they don't reproduce either. Those are some skanky looking broads.
Very well put! You're exactly right.
P.S. Janice Rogers Brown for Supreme Court Justice!!!
I'll second that. She would make a good one!
There is something very sick minded about holding up abortion signs and smiling as if it is a good cause.
Bossum Buddies, The Later Years (Your lookin' good Tom)
YES, I can...Are the Liberals scared? ..it seems so. Unionism is dying..the Liberal Plantation is losing its appeal...I love it all. :D
Yep... they were effective alright. They destroyed the family unit... helped take God out of the equation and killed a couple generations through "convenient abortions". Most young women are rebelling against what their Mom's represented in that movement and are angry they grew up in broken homes. They see the hypocrisy of these selfish old bats.
After looking at that pic....I swear those are guys who had sex-change ops!! They don't look like REAL women to me!
Liberalism, is their religion...Abortion, the Sacramental offering. :/
What's the sound of 800 bull-dykes ranting? Since they don't speak for women, no one but their friends in the media cares.
She'll do if we cant get Mary Jo Kopeckni to run!
Wow! This is tough action! I wonder what they would do if they found out about how women are treated in Muslim countries and even in Muslim families here? I'm scared!
Your supporters don't have children as a matter of principle and that will be your demise
Picture it one day: A bunch of old bittie dykes in nursing homes wondering why nobody comes to visit them....."oh, yeah, that's right.....I aborted that kid didn't I......gee, maybe somebody who went ahead and had kids could send over one of their offspring to pay me a visit........."
