WASHINGTON -- Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court and a key swing vote on issues such as abortion and the death penalty, said Friday she is retiring.
O'Connor, 75, said she expects to leave before the start of the court's next term in October, or whenever the Senate confirms her successor. There was no immediate word from the White House on who might be nominated to replace O'Connor.
It's been 11 years since the last opening on the court, one of the longest uninterrupted stretches in history. O'Connor's decision gives Bush his first opportunity to appoint a justice.

Not soon enough 'darlin!
This is going to be one ugly fight!
With Rehnquist, the replacement probably would be the same, in the eyes of the opposition. With O'Connor, the opposition will see any Bush nominee as more conservative than her. Replacing O'Connor with an actual conservative will result in a real shift in the balance of the court...the left will not stand for it. This will be nasty.
...and Renquist, soon too; time to stick it in the RAT DUmmies and slowly, agonizingly twist and shred with the likes of Judge Roy Moore and more of that ilk!
Ted Olsen.
If he had a record of doing that, I'd be worried. But considering that he's already nominated people like Estrada, Pickering, Brown, Owens, and Pryor for the circuit courts, I don't see him going squishy now for the Supreme Court.
Excellent nomination...
First Sandra was more conservative than many people realize, she was one of the four on the correct side in the recent Kelo case. I don't think it will be Al, but it will be a hispanic, I think it will be this Judge Garza, from what I have read he isn't super conservative, but the thinking is he is more conservative than Sandra D. or Al
Re:conservatives of the country will never forgive him and will turn their back on him for the next three years of his administration.
Who's side are you on ?
We're all gonna die!!!
AAAAHHH!!!
Given the President's support for internationalist treaties like CAFTA, LOST, for the Open Borders lobby, for CFR, and his tacit support for renewing the AWB if it should come across his desk... I can make a prediction where this will go, and I have the feeling many of us are going to be very dissapointed.
Bye bye soverignty!
Someone suggested Ted Olsen. Another, Bork. Both good suggestions. Let's see who Bush will select.
He had better not, however, pick someone with appeasing the RATS in mind.
I've had enough of an out of control Supreme Court.
I dont think that Alberto Gonzalez will get nominated, because who wants to eat Chimineychangas every day, not me.
It's going to be a very hot July/August in the political world. Get ready for nastiness like we've never before seen. This could be worse than the '04 election when this really gets going, of course everyone will be nice at the start of this process.
Grab some popcorn, this is gonna be good.
Who cares that the Dems will fight like mad.
You people act just like the Reps in the Senate. Oh, we must not make our "friends" mad, we'll just do this instead.
Not meaning you specifically, your statement just made me see red about catering to the madness of the dems. Well, we can get a little mad too and it is about time to quit worrying about what the dems will do.
We know what they will do, they will fight anything a conservative does. So, on to the next step, they can just get unmad same as they got mad, it will not temper our actions.
Can't wait til the media starts campaigning for a "moderate" to "bring balance" to the court. Maybe they'll even suggest John McCain.
Sandra Day O'Connor is just about my favorite Justice. ...GHAD..
It's all up to McCain. He runs the senate.
