Ted Olson really is a classy guy, I've always admired him greatly. I believe he is a man of great integrity--he just gives the impression of being a man of steel. He certainly chose an amazing woman as his wife. They must have been a terrific couple.

Today's best quote from the left:

"As an attorney, I'm thoroughly disheartened by O'Connor's resignation. I viewed her as the voice of moderation on the Court, as well as perhaps the finest legal mind -- she was always able to point out the flaws in the analyses of other Justices and to suggest new, more-durable ways of interpreting the law.

I was in a policy meeting of ten people this morning when an intern entered and announced the resignation. The consensus at the meeting was that in terms of the law, we're about to be plunged back to the 1700s; the assumption was that Rehnquist will also resign, Scalia will be named Chief Justice, and his strict-constructionist position will rule the day.

We all felt sick."

Yahooooo! This is a great day.

I just see a Gonzales being a tough one to get through.

I see Gonzales getting confirmed at least 95-5.

Ted Olson would be a huge improvement over O'Conner. Then again, that's not saying much.

We don't want to remove a conservative sitting senator...we need all we can get right where they are.

Oddly enough, weren't all (or at least most of) the names Harry Reid suggested as reasonably acceptable to Dems sitting senators? (He must agree with you!)

The U.S. does not need another change of the guard at the Justice Department. The war against terrorism comes first. Gonzales is Attorney General, and he needs to stay that way.

Reid/Liberals are hoping no one on the Republican side thought the issue through. LOL

My perfect Rovian storm eight-ball predicter of the future says Bush should nominate Hillary! causing her to have to decline the offer as being beneath her Presidential goals leaving no other choice but to nominate Janice Brown.

As an aside, i'm either changing to de-caf coffee or throwing away my eight ball predicter...maybe both :o)

Was President Nixon impeached?

No.

Only two US presidents have been impeached, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.

When you are in a hole, stop digging. You made a mistake by claiming that President Nixon was impeached in 1973. Just admit the mistake and move on. All of us make mistakes, especially when commenting on a live thread.

History of Impeachment

Unfortunately, I don't trust that Bush will nominate a truly conservative replacement.

I believe he will, for three reasons:

(1) All the names floated over the past several weeks (with the possible exception of Gonzales) are solid conservatives.

(2) Bush and Rove know the devastating effects a moderate nomination would have on the morale of the Republican base.

(3) I believe the President himself wants the same thing we want. Pryor, Owens, Brown, Estrada, etc., were not just bones thrown our way. They represent Bush's own philosophy.

I am not a lawyer, but my understanding is that impeachment is the accusation and preparation of articles of impeachment. The vote is the conviction. An impeachment is sort of like an indictment.

I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding is that articles of impeachment were being prepared (or had been prepared) but the House had not yet voted on the articles. The House probably WOULD have voted up the articles, so Nixon resigned before the vote.

True enough about Ted, evidently-
But what about the Ted that IS serving in the Senate?
Adulterer AND murderer!
If we apply THAT standard to all government employees-there goes most of the Senate and Congress!
